Simple constructions for deformation in transpression/transtension zones

Journal of Structural Geology, 1986
Abstract A simple geometrical construction is demonstrated for determining the orientations of the principal axes of the infinitesimal strain ellipsoid in tectonic zones where boundaries obliquely converge or diverge. The construction may also be used to determine the relative magnitudes of the principal axes and the ellipsoid shape, for ...

Analogue modelling of faulting in zones of continental transpression and transtension

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 1998
Abstract Experiments were performed to simulate deformation in zones of continental transpression and transtension. Stratified models consisted of brittle analogue materials overlying a thin layer of viscous material. Oblique deformation was obtained by combining a basal, distributed strike-slip shear component with either transverse ...

Mesozoic transpression, transtension, subduction and metallogenesis in northern and central California

Terra Nova, 2008
AbstractMiddle Paleozoic to Middle Jurassic terrane assemblies in the Klamaths and Sierran Foothills consist of mafic–ultramafic complexes + fine‐grained terrigenous strata derived from previously accreted continental‐margin belts. Sutured oceanic terranes reflectc.230 Myr of margin‐parallel slip involving chiefly transtension and transpression ...

Transpression (or transtension) zones of triclinic symmetry: natural example and theoretical modelling

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 1998
Abstract We describe a natural shear zone with triclinic symmetry, present a general model for triclinic shear zones based on natural examples, and investigate the kinematics and strain geometry within such zones. In the Roper Lake shear zone in the Canadian Appalachians, the orientation of a stretching lineation is oriented ...

Alkaline syenites in eastern Cathaysia (South China): link to Permian–Triassic transtension

Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 2005
Abstract Two alkaline syenite plutons, the Tieshan and Yangfang plutons, have recently been recognized within NE-trending fault zones in eastern Cathaysia, South China. The rocks are very enriched in K2O (6.28–9.39 wt.%), rare earth elements (REE; particularly light REE) and large ion lithophile elements, but are relatively low in high field strength

Transpression and transtension within different structural levels in the central Aegean region

Journal of Structural Geology, 1994
In the central Aegean region, shortening structures within the Miocene molasse arc known since long ago. Nevertheless recently, most authors have recognized extensional structures within Middle to Upper Miocene granitoids, proposing a Basin and Range type model for the Late Cenozoic evolution of the area. To resolve this problem, structural mapping and

A model for Neogene crustal rotations, transtension, and transpression in southern California

Geological Society of America Bulletin, 1991
Two episodes of crustal rotation have occurred in the regions of southern California and the Mojave Desert since the beginning of Miocene time. An early Miocene episode of clockwise crustal rotation is associated with widespread north-south to north-northeast-south-southwest crustal extension throughout southeast California and western Arizona.

Formation of new continental crust in Western British Columbia during transpression and transtension

Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 2006
Crustal growth in the Coast Mountains, along the leading edge of the Canadian Cordillera, was the result of processes associated with horizontal flow of material during transpression and subsequent transtension, and the vertical accretion of mantle derived melts.
