Phylogenomic Investigation of Increasing Fluoroquinolone Resistance among Belgian Cases of Shigellosis between 2013 and 2018 Indicates Both Travel-Related Imports and Domestic Circulation

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
Shigellosis is an acute enteric infection caused mainly by the species Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei. Since surveillance of these pathogens indicated an increase in ciprofloxacin-resistant samples collected in Belgium between 2013 and 2018, a ...

Recovery and microbial host assignment of mobile genetic elements in complex microbiomes: insights from a spiked gut sample

open access: yesmSystems
Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) are major drivers of horizontal gene transfer, including the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. However, determining the microbial host of an MGE in complex microbiomes remains challenging.

Hydrogel with silver nanoparticles synthesized by Mimosa tenuiflora for second-degree burns treatment

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
In this work we use Mimosa tenuiflora (MtE) extracts as reducing agents to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgMt NPs) which were characterized by DPPH and Total Polyphenols Assays, UV–visible, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), high-resolution transmission ...

Detection and identification of authorized and unauthorized GMOs using high-throughput sequencing with the support of a sequence-based GMO database

open access: yesFood Chemistry: Molecular Sciences, 2022
The increasing number and diversity of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for the food and feed market calls for the development of advanced methods for their detection and identification. This issue can be addressed by next generation sequencing (NGS)

Galaxy @Sciensano: a comprehensive bioinformatics portal for genomics-based microbial typing, characterization, and outbreak detection

open access: yesBMC Genomics
The influx of whole genome sequencing (WGS) data in the public health and clinical diagnostic sectors has created a need for data analysis methods and bioinformatics expertise, which can be a bottleneck for many laboratories.

Carcinomas and Carcinoid Tumors of the Lungs and Bronchi in Children and Adolescents: The EXPeRT Recommendations

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Primary lung carcinomas and bronchial carcinoid tumors (BC) are very rare malignancies in childhood. While typical BC and mucoepidermoid carcinomas are mostly low‐grade, localized tumors with a more favorable prognosis than in adults, necessitating avoidance of overtreatment, adenocarcinomas of the lung are often diagnosed at advanced disease ...

Investigating fungal diversity through metabarcoding for environmental samples: assessment of ITS1 and ITS2 Illumina sequencing using multiple defined mock communities with different classification methods and reference databases

open access: yesBMC Genomics
An important challenge in taxonomic classification of environmental samples is capturing the real diversity by identifying all species present in a sample. Metabarcoding approaches are often employed to identify species in complex samples.

Transversal Greedoids

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Combinatorics, 1997
A new class of set systems is defined in terms of transversals of sets. Examination of the structure of these systems reveals that they are in fact examples of strong greedoids, namely greedoids which are greedy algorithm compatible, called by the author transversal greedoids.
