Distinct Microstructural Characteristic Lengths Defining Notch Fatigue Crack Initiation and Propagation, and Defect Tolerance in Advanced Steels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of modes of microcrack nucleation, growth and temporary arrestment at different boundaries, with the criteria for crack propagation in three scenarios: (1) large notch, (2) defect/small sharp notch, and (3) long crack. This work revisits and integrates results on the fatigue behavior of advanced bainitic steels (in particular ...

Shear Behaviour in Slender Reinforced Concrete Beams with and without Transverse Reinforcement

open access: yes
This study investigates shear crack behaviour in slender reinforced concrete (RC) beams, focusing on the critical shear crack (CSC) geometry and its impact on crack kinematics and shear transfer mechanisms. Existing models often oversimplify CSC shape assumptions, potentially leading to inaccuracies in shear capacity predictions.

Can steel fibres replace transverse reinforcements in reinforced concrete girders ?

open access: yes, 1995
Metal fibre concretes at present in use do not possess sufficient postcracking tensile strength to be used without main reinforcements in a girder but the replacement of minor reinforcements appears to be promising. The use of fibres would save an appreciable amount of lime and facilitate the concrete implementation in strongly reinforced structures ...

Microstructure Modification of Additively Manufactured Mo–9Si–8B by Annealing and Its Effects on High‐Temperature Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Postbuild annealing systematically modifies the phase fractions and morphology of EB‐PBF processed Mo–9Si–8B. Quantitative microstructure–property correlations reveal how controlled phase evolution enhances high‐temperature compressive strength and creep resistance.

Discrepancies Between Micro Versus Macroscale Viscoelastic Properties in a Microplastic‐Tissue Composite Model

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores the discrepancies between bulk mechanics and spatial mapping in a tissue‐mimetic hydrogel model. Microplastic particles create localized stiff mechanical microenvironments that are detectable by cellular‐scale nanoindentation but leave bulk properties unchanged as measured by rheology.
