A mixed‐methods evaluation of why an implementation trial failed to engage veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder in trauma‐focused psychotherapy

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, Volume 36, Issue 4, Page 762-771, August 2023., 2023
Abstract An effectiveness trial found that telemedicine collaborative care for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) significantly increased engagement in trauma‐focused psychotherapy (TFP) and improved PTSD symptoms. However, in a subsequent implementation trial, very few veterans enrolled in collaborative care initiated TFP.

Negative affect provides a context for increased distrust in the daily lives of individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, Volume 36, Issue 4, Page 808-819, August 2023., 2023
Abstract Evidence on individuals affected by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following childhood maltreatment (CM) supports cognitive models suggesting that trauma engenders distrust and interpersonal threat sensitivity. We examined the associations between CM and both distrust and interpersonal threat sensitivity in daily life and investigated ...

Posttraumatic stress disorder, traumatic events, and longitudinal eating disorder treatment outcomes: A systematic review

open access: yesInternational Journal of Eating Disorders, Volume 56, Issue 6, Page 1055-1074, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Objective Many individuals diagnosed with an eating disorder (ED) have been exposed to traumatic events, and some of these individuals are diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although theorized by researchers and clinicians, it is unclear whether traumatic event exposure or PTSD interferes with outcomes from ED treatment.

Effect of Life Review Therapy for Holocaust Survivors: A randomized controlled trial

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, Volume 36, Issue 3, Page 628-641, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Despite the therapeutic needs of aging Holocaust survivors, no randomized controlled trial (RCT) of psychotherapy exists for this population, with very few on older adults in general. This RCT aimed to compare the efficacy of Life Review Therapy for Holocaust survivors (LRT‐HS) relative to a supportive control group. Holocaust survivors with a

The impact of immigration detention on the mental health of refugees and asylum seekers

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, Volume 36, Issue 3, Page 642-653, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Studies consistently report that asylum seekers held in immigration detention have relatively high rates of mental distress, yet evidence of the long‐term impact of immigration detention is limited. Using propensity score–based methods, we estimated the impact of immigration detention on the prevalence of nonspecific psychological distress ...

Social support as a predictor of outcomes of cognitive behavioral therapy with a trauma focus delivered face‐to‐face and via guided internet‐based self‐help

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, Volume 36, Issue 3, Page 511-523, June 2023., 2023
Abstract There is mounting evidence that cognitive behavioral therapy with a trauma focus (CBT‐TF) delivered via guided internet‐based self‐help is noninferior to CBT‐TF delivered face‐to‐face for individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) of mild‐to‐moderate severity.

U.S. mothers’ appraisals of the race‐related events of 2020: Implications for the course of maternal posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, Volume 36, Issue 2, Page 272-284, April 2023., 2023
Abstract For parents of color, publicized racial violence can heighten concerns about their children's safety. The goal of this study was to test whether this form of race‐related stress exacerbates maternal posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms over a 4‐month period in families of color. Participants included 262 U.S.

Effects of trauma‐focused rumination among trauma‐exposed individuals with and without posttraumatic stress disorder: An experiment

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, Volume 36, Issue 2, Page 285-298, April 2023., 2023
Abstract Rumination, or thinking repetitively about one's distress, is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Current theories suggest that rumination contributes to PTSD symptoms directly, by increasing negative reactions to trauma cues (i.e., symptom exacerbation), or represents a form of cognitive avoidance, if verbal ruminations ...

The bumpy road of trauma‐focused treatment: Posttraumatic stress disorder symptom exacerbation in people with psychosis

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, Volume 36, Issue 2, Page 299-309, April 2023., 2023
Abstract Concern for symptom exacerbation and treatment drop‐out is an important barrier to the implementation of trauma‐focused therapy (TFT), especially in people with a psychotic disorder. This study, which was part of a multicenter randomized controlled trial, investigated posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom exacerbation during eye ...

Child posttraumatic stress symptoms in an acute injury sample: Patterns of associations among child report, parent report, and child heart rate parameters

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, Volume 36, Issue 2, Page 333-345, April 2023., 2023
Abstract Parent–child agreement on measures of child posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is moderate at best, and understanding of this discrepancy is limited. To address this, we conducted an item‐level investigation of parent–child symptom agreement to examine the potential influence of parental posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) on parents ...
