BJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1015-1021, December 2020., 2020 This meta‐analysis investigated the influence of selective decontamination of the digestive tract (SDD) on outcomes after upper gastrointestinal surgery. SDD led to a reduction in anastomotic leakage (odds ratio (OR) 0·39, 95 per cent c.i. 0·19 to 0·80; P = 0·010) and pneumonia (OR 0·42, 0·23 to 0·78; P = 0·006).

Several issues were reportedly experienced by over 70 per cent of respondents. Seven recruitment and two retention issues were rated ‘moderate’ or ‘serious’ by a majority of respondents.

BJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 11, Page 1468-1479, October 2020., 2020 Age, ill health and frailty all influence surgical decision‐making for breast cancer. Breast cancer surgery is safe, with serious adverse events being rare and no mortality. However, surgery has a negative impact on quality of life and independence, which must be considered when counselling patients about choices.
