Tracking traveling ionospheric disturbances through Doppler-shifted AM radio transmissions [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques
Six specialized radio receivers were developed to measure the Doppler shift of amplitude modulation (AM) broadcast radio carrier signals due to ionospheric effects.

Travelling ionospheric disturbance over California mid 2000 [PDF]

open access: yesNonlinear Processes in Geophysics, 2006
Abstract. In this paper, the GPS data collected by more than 130 permanent GPS stations that belong to the Southern California Integrated GPS Network (SCIGN) around the launch of a Minuteman-II missile on 8 July 2000 (UTC) is processed to reveal traveling ionospheric disturbance (TID) all over the network on average 15 min after the launch.

OH Airglow for Ionospheric Seismology Applications—From Instrumental Noise Characterization to Rayleigh Waves Detection Threshold

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Airglow layers are powerful tracers of upper‐atmosphere dynamics because of their sensitivity to a broad spectrum of atmospheric wave phenomena. Seismic activity, and in particular Rayleigh waves, constitutes a forcing mechanism capable of generating infrasonic waves in the atmosphere.

A multi-instrumental study of ionospheric disturbances associated with the 2024 Mw 7.4 Hualien earthquake

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space
This study investigates the ionospheric disturbances triggered by the 2024 Mw 7.4 Hualien earthquake using a dense network of ground-based GNSS receivers and space-borne FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 (F7/C2) radio occultation (RO) data.

Ionospheric effects during first 2 hours after the Chelyabinsk meteorite impact [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper presents the analysis of ionospheric effects in the region close to the Chelyabinsk meteorite explosion at 03:20UT 2013 February 15 from the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (ISTP SB RAS)

Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances in the F Region [PDF]

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Physics, 1958
Observations of the horizontal movements of travelling ionospheric disturbances recorded on a single radio frequency from April 1948 to March 1957 are analysed for seasonal and diurnal variations of occurrence and of direction and speed of travel. Recording was mainly in daylight hours but some limited night results are included.

Imprint of the Quasi‐Biennial Oscillation on the Ionosphere and Thermosphere

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract The Quasi‐Biennial Oscillation (QBO) is a dominant mode of stratospheric variability and is known to modulate the variability of the ionosphere‐thermosphere (IT) system. However, the extent of its influence on the ionosphere‐thermosphere system remains uncertain due to weak signals and confounding with similar periodicities in solar flux.

ADDTID: An Alternative Tool for Studying Earthquake/Tsunami Signatures in the Ionosphere. Case of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
In this work, we characterized the ionospheric disturbances generated during the Japan Tohoku earthquake of 11 March 2011, by means of the Atomic Decomposition Detector of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (ADDTID) algorithm.

Investigation of traveling ionospheric disturbances [PDF]

open access: yes
Maximum entropy power spectra of the ionospheric electron density were constructed to enable PINY to compare them with the power independently obtained by PINY with in situ measurements of ionospheric electron density and neutral species performed with ...

Statistical Study of Short Large‐Amplitude Magnetic Structures at Mars Observed by MAVEN

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract We present a statistical study of Short Large‐Amplitude Magnetic Structures (SLAMS) in the Martian foreshock using data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission between 01 January 2015 and 31 December 2019. We have identified 21,008 SLAMS during this time interval and statistical results are presented on the SLAMS ...
