Fisheries Research, 2002The effect of speed through water on the footrope capture efficiency of a survey bottom trawl was experimentally investigated by repetitively towing at three vessel speeds (2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 knots) with an auxiliary net attached underneath the trawl footrope to capture fish escaping beneath the trawl.

When the same areas are trawled frequently, the community on the seafloor can be drastically changed. Long-lived species such as corals and sponges are severely affected.

Use of a semi-pelagic trawl in a tropical demersal trawl fishery
Fisheries Research, 1993Abstract A fork rigged semi-pelagic trawl was modified to meet Australian regulations and its performance was evaluated against that of a demersal trawl commonly used in a tropical trawl fishery. The catch rates and sizes of commercial species (mainly Lutjanus spp.) and production costs were found to be similar in both nets.
