Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the use of near-infrared (NIR) or red light (600–1100 nm) to positively affect brain function. PBM treatment of healthy human young and elderly volunteers has demonstrated improvements in mood, cognitive function, and memory, with increases in regional cerebral blood flow and tissue oxygenation.
