Green Algal Photobiont Diversity in Lichen Communities Under Forest Fragmentation
Forest fragmentation influences photobiont diversity in lichen symbioses through changes in the fungal partners. By sequencing over 2000 lichen thalli, we found 33 photobiont species, including new taxa and first records for Europe. These results highlight underestimated symbiotic diversity and the role of habitat structure in shaping symbiotic systems.
