Molecular characterization of eukaryotic algal communities in the tropical phyllosphere based on real-time sequencing of the 18S rDNA gene

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology, 2018
Backgroud Foliicolous algae are a common occurrence in tropical forests. They are referable to a few simple morphotypes (unicellular, sarcinoid-like or filamentous), which makes their morphology of limited usefulness for taxonomic studies and species ...

Photosynthesis under far‐red light—evolutionary adaptations and bioengineering of light‐harvesting complexes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 600, Issue 2, Page 164-187, January 2026.
Phototrophs evolved light‐harvesting systems adapted for efficient photon capture in habitats enriched in far‐red radiation. A subset of eukaryotic pigment‐binding proteins can absorb far‐red photons via low‐energy chlorophyll states known as red forms.

Exploring the Dietary Preferences of Limnic Supraglacial Consumers: 13C and 15N Isotopic Food Labelling in Tardigrades and Rotifers From Cryoconite Holes

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Cryoconite holes are among the most biologically active and diverse limnic habitats on glacier surfaces. The apex cryoconite consumers, tardigrades and rotifers, are known to contribute significantly to the processing and composition of supraglacial (i.e., glacier surface) organic matter (OM).

Global distribution of Trebouxiophyceae diversity explored by high‐throughput sequencing and phylogenetic approaches [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, 2019
Summary Trebouxiophyceae are a ubiquitous class of Chlorophyta encountered in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Most taxa are photosynthetic, and many acts as photobionts in symbiotic relationships, while others are free‐living.

Isolation, Characterization, and Biofuel Potential of Marine Microalgae Discovered From the Bay of Bengal

open access: yesInternational Journal of Energy Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The rising global demand for renewable energy and dietary sources has brought about rekindled interest in recent years in marine microalgae as a prospective feedstock for next‐generation biofuels. In this research, a novel marine microalgal strain Picochlorum sp.

Responses of the Antarctic microalga Koliella antarctica (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) to cadmium contamination

open access: yesPhotosynthetica, 2009
Ultrastructural and physiological effects of exposure to 1 ppm and 5 ppm of cadmium (Cd) on cultured cells of Koliella antarctica, a green microalga from Antarctica, were investigated. The amount of Cd in the alga rose with the increase of the metal concentration in the growth medium and most Cd remained outside the cells, bound to the components of ...

The genome sequence of the chlorophyte Marvania coccoides CCAP 251/1B (Naumann) Henley, Hironaka, Guillou, M. Buchheim, J. Buchheim, M. Fawley & K. Fawley 2004 [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]

open access: yesWellcome Open Research
We present a genome assembly from a culture of Marvania coccoides (CCAP 251/1B) (Chlorophyta; Trebouxiophyceae; Chlorellales; Chlorellaceae). The genome sequence is 22.3 megabases in span.

Lake–Groundwater Biogeochemical Interactions in a River‐Delimited System: The Groundwater and Lakes Urban Observatory (GLUO)

open access: yesInternational Review of Hydrobiology, Volume 110, Issue 2, Page 135-150, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Preservation of urban aquatic ecosystems is of primary importance for human well‐being, biodiversity protection and the future of society. Lake–groundwater–river interactions within urban floodplains harbour intrinsic fragility, yet remain largely understudied.

Exploring the Regional Diversity of Eukaryotic Phytoplankton in the English Channel by Combining High‐Throughput Approaches

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 14, Issue 6, December 2025.
By combining flow cytometry and high‐throughput sequencing, we reveal seasonal and spatial variations in the size, composition, and diversity of phytoplankton in the English Channel, highlighting the dynamics of pico‐, nano‐, and microphytoplankton and environmental factors, with the Seine Bay as a hotspot of taxonomic and functional diversity ...

Green Algal Photobiont Diversity in Lichen Communities Under Forest Fragmentation

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 27, Issue 12, December 2025.
Forest fragmentation influences photobiont diversity in lichen symbioses through changes in the fungal partners. By sequencing over 2000 lichen thalli, we found 33 photobiont species, including new taxa and first records for Europe. These results highlight underestimated symbiotic diversity and the role of habitat structure in shaping symbiotic systems.
