Forest-tree breeding

Economic Botany, 1948
The breeding of forest trees by means of selection and of hybridization in order to obtain increased disease resistance and improved utilitarian qualities in pulp and timber trees is still in the experimental stage, but long-range planning along these lines offers one means of balancing diminishing timber supplies.

Modern Advances in Tree Breeding

2013
Traditional tree improvement programs are long-term endeavours requiring extensive resources. They require establishing mating designs, installing progeny tests on multiple sites to evaluate parents and their offspring over large geographic areas, monitoring those tests over extended periods of time, and eventual analysis of measurements to assess ...

Tree Breeding Opportunities and Limitations

1988
Since the mid-1950s, tree breeders have demonstrated that simple selection-type breeding operations can substantially increase yield and modify many traits and adaptabilities. Yet, forest genetics has had only minor impact on the vast majority of commercial forest land and no impact on bringing marginally commercial land into production.

TEA TREE BREEDING

1999
Australian tea tree oil from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden and Betche) Cheel is an important commercial product due to its antimicrobial properties. Oil production has expanded in recent years to meet increased demand for the oil from both Australia and overseas.

Tree Breeding for Photosynthetic Efficiency

South African Forestry Journal, 1976
ABSTRACT Some recent results obtained in studying the genetic variability of photosynthetic rates in forest trees and its implications in breeding trees with better growth performance are discussed. Results are still scanty and difficult to interpret but point out to genetically based differences in photosynthesis in forest trees.
