Fascioliasis: An Ongoing Zoonotic Trematode Infection [PDF]

open access: yesBioMed Research International, 2015
Zoonotic trematode infections are an area of the neglected tropical diseases that have become of major interest to global and public health due to their associated morbidity. Human fascioliasis is a trematode zoonosis of interest in public health. It affects approximately 50 million people worldwide and over 180 million are at risk of infection in both

A volunteer-populated online database provides evidence for a geographic pattern in symptoms of black spot infections

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, 2019
Infections of parasitic digenean trematode metacercariae may lead to a visually observable syndrome in fish commonly called black spot disease. While black spot has been noted from various locations throughout North America, patterns in prevalence across

Lymphocystis Disease in Endemic Aotearoa New Zealand Bully (Gobiomorphus cotidianus)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We detected lymphocystis disease virus (LCDV) for the first time in an Aotearoa New Zealand freshwater environment, from an individual common bully, toitoi, Gobiomorphus cotidianus (Eleotridae). Dinah's bully, Gobiomorphus dinae, and Kaharore bully, Gobiomorphus mataraerore, also exhibited gross nodular lesions on the fins but were not sampled.

Diagnosis and Off‐Label Treatment of Subcutaneous Putative Dracunculoid Nematodes in Apteronotus albifrons Originating From Wild‐Caught Fisheries

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.

Do Parasite Effects on Fish Body Condition Depend on Host Size and External Temperature? A Meta‐Analytic Approach

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
Evaluating relationships between host body condition indices (BCIs) and parasite infections is a common approach for assessing the negative effects of parasites on host health. Researchers generally expect negative correlations between BCIs and infection levels; however, empirical results are often highly variable among host–parasite systems.

Trematode Parasite Infections in Freshwater Leeches from the Central Region of Lithuania: First Record of Posthodiplostomum (Dubois, 1936) in a Leech Host

open access: yesDiversity
Leeches play a critical role in the transmission of digenean trematodes, yet their parasitic infections remain understudied in the Baltic region. This study investigates the diversity, prevalence, and molecular identification of trematode infections in ...

Eosinophilia in the Tropics: Should Empirical Anthelmintic Treatment Be Considered Standard Practice? A Prospective Cohort Study

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Eosinophilia is a common clinical finding with diverse etiologies. Helminthiasis is a major aetiology in tropical regions, but data from haematology consultation services at tertiary centres in endemic settings are limited. Objectives To determine the prevalence of helminthiasis among patients with eosinophilia at a tropical ...

Infection with the Neorickettsial Organism Stellantchasmus falcatus Agent in an Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus)

open access: yesVeterinary Clinical Pathology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A 1‐year‐old female‐intact arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) presented for diarrhea, lethargy, severe thrombocytopenia, and hyperbilirubinemia. Blood film evaluation revealed intracytoplasmic coccoid bacteria within moderate numbers of leukocytes consistent with infection by a rickettsial organism.
