First sighting of a tropical benthic reef shark species at Rapa Nui: chance dispersal or a sign of things to come?

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, 2019
On 20 December 2017, a mature Triaenodon obesus was observed at Hanga Roa Bay, Rapa Nui (Easter Island) at c.18 m depth. This observation increases both the range of T. obesus in the Pacific Ocean and the number of elasmobranch species at Rapa Nui.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the whitetip reef shark Triaenodon obesus (Carcharhiniformes: Carcharhinidae)

Mitochondrial DNA Part A, 2014
The complete mitochondrial genome of the whitetip reef shark Triaenodon obesus is determined in this study. It is 16,700 bp in length, with the typical gene composition, arrangement and transcriptional orientation in vertebrates. The overall base composition is 31.4% A, 25.8% C, 13.2% G and 29.7% T. Two start codons and two stop codons are found in the

Group courtship, mating behaviour and siphon sac function in the whitetip reef shark, Triaenodon obesus

Animal Behaviour, 2004
We analysed video records of three mating events involving nine free-living whitetip reef sharks in Cocos Islands, Costa Rica to examine reproductive behaviour in this species. We describe several behaviours never before documented in this species, and four behaviours never before documented in any elasmobranch.

Serum corticosterone concentrations in immature captive whitetip reef sharks, Triaenodon obesus

Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1993
AbstractSerum concentrations of the steroid hormone corticosterone were monitored over a four‐year period in two male and two female immature captive whitetip reef sharks, Triaenodon obesus. Corticosterone concentrations in the serum ranged from 69–999 pg/ml (319.8 ± 31.9; n = 36) for males and 3–246 pg/ml (116.0 ± 15.1; n = 32) for females.

Husbandry and reproduction of Whitetip reef sharks Triaenodon obesus at Steinhart Aquarium, San Francisco

International Zoo Yearbook, 2006
At Steinhart Aquarium between December 2001 and July 2003 four litters of Whitetip reef sharks Triaenodon obesus were born to two ♀♀ producing at least 13 pups. Mean gestation period, estimated from the first appearance of mating wounds on the ♀ to parturition, was 387 ± 33·7 days (mean ± SD; n= 3).
