Triangle or tripod? Neither: A diagrammatic investigation into a sign’s visual representation

open access: yesSign Systems Studies
This paper takes a look at the morphological structure of the two dominant diagrams (the triangle and the tripod) used in semiotic literature to represent the irreducible triadic sign of C. S. Peirce in order to evaluate their diagrammatic aptitude, i.e.

Near‐Infrared Emitting Lanthanide Catecholate Giant Single Crystals – Morphology Control and Photon Down‐Conversion

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Controlled syntheses of lanthanide coordination polymers based on the dihydroxybenzoquinone (DHBQ) organic linker afforded large single crystals of Ln‐DHBQ CPs (Ln = Yb, Nd). A novel structural variant of Yb‐DHBQ is identified by means of single crystal diffraction analysis.

Tuning the Dielectric Properties of Individual Clay Nanosheets by Interlayer Composition: Toward Nano‐Electret Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The dielectric properties of clays are studied on the level of individual monolayers and functional double stacks. The material breakdown characteristics and charge storage performance are analyzed. For illustration, a defined charge pattern representing a cuneiform character is produced, written into a microscopic clay tile, referencing the origins of

$L^p-L^q$ estimates for maximal operators associated to families of finite type curves

open access: yes, 2020
We study the boundedness problem for maximal operators $\mathbb{M}$ associated to averages along families of finite type curves in the plane, defined by $$\mathbb{M}f(x) \, := \, \sup_{1 \leq t \leq 2} \left|\int_{\mathbb{C}} f(x-ty) \, \rho(y) \, d ...

On‐Surface Indigo‐Based Bimolecular Coordination Networks with Programmable Regular or Vitreous Structure

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A previously unreported coordination motif stabilising single Fe atoms by indigo chelation and pyridyl coordination on Au(111) has been revealed. By using planar tritopic pyridyl linkers (TPyB), extended 2D porous networks of indigo3(TPyB)2Fe6 form. These networks can be crystalline or vitreous and offer an environment where individual coordination ...

Mechanical Properties of Architected Polymer Lattice Materials: A Comparative Study of Additive Manufacturing and CAD Using FEM and µ‐CT

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines how pore shape and manufacturing‐induced deviations affect the mechanical properties of 3D‐printed lattice materials with constant porosity. Combining µ‐CT analysis, FEM, and compression testing, the authors show that structural imperfections reduce stiffness and strength, while bulk material inhomogeneities probably enhance ...

Programmable DNA‐Peptide Hybrid Nanostructures for Potent Neutralization of Multiple Influenza a Virus Subtypes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A multivalent antiviral platform based on honeycomb‐shaped DNA nanostructures (HC–Urumin) is developed to enhance the potency and breadth of the host defense peptide Urumin. Through spatially patterned trimeric presentation, HC–Urumin disrupts influenza A virus entry, improves cell viability, and reduces disease severity in vivo‐offering a modular and ...

New Refinements of the Erdös–Mordell Inequality and Barrow’s Inequality

open access: yesMathematics, 2019
In this paper, two new refinements of the Erdös−Mordell inequality and three new refinements of Barrow’s inequality are established. Some related interesting conjectures are put forward.
