In Situ and Laboratory Testing of Boom Clay at Shallow Depths in Belgium

open access: yesGeotechnics
The shear strength and compression properties of stiff Boom clay from Belgium at a depth of about 16.5 to 28 m were investigated by means of cone penetration and laboratory testing.

Microstructural Evolution of Carrara Marble During Semi‐Brittle Deformation

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 130, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract Fifteen marble samples were subjected to semi‐brittle deformation through triaxial compression experiments, reaching axial strains of about 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.0%, 4.0%, or 7.5% at temperatures of 20°C, 200°C, or 350°C, under a confining pressure of 400 MPa.

Relationship between the matric suction and the shear strength in unsaturated soil

open access: yesCase Studies in Construction Materials, 2020
To understand the shear strength properties for unsaturated soil with different matric suction values, a modified triaxial test device was used. The matric suction is considered an important contributor to unsaturated shear strength properties.

Fluid Chemistry Effect on Localized and Ductile Deformation of a Porous Sandstone

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 130, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract In geological reservoirs, pore fluid chemistry can affect rock strength by inducing mineral dissolution, precipitation, and alteration, among other processes. Increasing pressure and temperature can shift deformation from localized to ductile, decreasing permeability and affecting reservoir exploitability.

Superstability of micrometre jets surrounded by a polymeric shell

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, Volume 58, Issue 4, Page 1261-1268, August 2025.
Superstable micrometre compound jets have been produced for serial femtosecond X‐ray crystallography. We have produced superstable compound liquid microjets with a 3D‐printed coaxial flow‐focusing injector. The aqueous jet core is surrounded by a shell, a few hundred nanometres in thickness, of a low‐concentration aqueous solution of a low‐molecular ...

Investigating Criticality in Rock Failure Using Fiber‐Optic Strain Sensing

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 14, 28 July 2025.
Abstract Gradual localization of deformation preceding catastrophic failure can produce precursory signals associated with a phase transition that may be present prior to earthquakes. However, due to the unclear origin of these precursors and the complexity of the environmental conditions, detecting such preparatory signals remains challenging. Here we

Shear failure behaviors and degradation mechanical model of rockmass under true triaxial multi-level loading and unloading shear tests

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mining Science and Technology
The redistribution of three-dimensional (3D) geostress during underground tunnel excavation can easily induce to shear failure along rockmass structural plane, potentially resulting in engineering disasters. However, the current understanding of rockmass
