Sand Liquefaction in Triaxial and Simple Shear Tests

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1971
Data from cyclic loading simple shear and triaxial tests indicate that the important variable controlling the incidence of liquefaction in a given number of cycles in a saturated sand at a particular void ratio is the initial effective stress ratio; the ratio of the peak alternating shear stress to the initial effective mean normal stress.

Statistical Description of Triaxial Shear Test Results

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1990
Abstract Any probabilistic approach to slope stability assessment requires an adequate statistical description of soil strength. Current statistical methods of strength description are unsuitable for this purpose. A statistical technique of soil strength description appropriate for the probabilistic assessment of slope stability in c′, φ′

A Triaxial-Measurement Shear-Test Device for Soft Biological Tissues

Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, 2000
A novel shear-test device for soft biological tissue, capable of applying simple shear deformations simultaneously in two orthogonal directions while measuring the resulting forces generated in three axes, is described. We validated the device using a synthetic gel, the properties of which were ascertained from independent tensile and rotational shear ...

Triaxial Shear Tests on Pervious Gravelly Soils

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1956
Tests to determine shear characteristics of free draining gravelly soils; relations between shear resistance and density, amount of gravel, gradation, maximum particle size, and particle shape; effect of testing speed on shear test data and effect of specimen size for any maximum particle size up to 3 in.

On Comparing Simple Shear and Triaxial Test Results

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1984
It is indisputable that nonuniformities of stresses and strains exist in soils tested not only in the simple shear apparatus (SSA) but in the triaxial apparatus as well. These nonuniformities alone cannot explain the differences observed from the results of soils tests in the SSA and the triaxial apparatus.

Effects of Shear Band Formation in Triaxial Extension Tests

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1996
Abstract The stress-strain and strength behavior from conventional triaxial extension tests is usually erratic due to excessive influence of necking in the hardening regime followed by shear banding. Two techniques have been attempted to impede the onset and gross development of strain localization. These resulted in macroscopically more

Shear Stress and Pore Pressure in Triaxial Testing

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1965
The effects of frictional end restraint in triaxial testing may be avoided by using lubricated loading platens or segmental specimens. Segmental specimens consist of a central segment sandwiched between end segments that are sealed in a latex film. Pore pressures are measured only in the rather uniformly stressed central zone. Using this technique, the

Shear fracture energy of Stripa granite- results of controlled triaxial testing

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1990
Abstract We have performed controlled triaxial experiments on Stripa granite in a ‘nearly stiff’ environment. This means that, before the commencement of loading, an initial confining pressure was ‘locked’ in the pressurizing chamber of the triaxial vessel.

Determination of the Shear Strength of Unsaturated Loess Samples from Conventional Triaxial Shear Tests Applying Rubber Membrane Correction

open access: yesSustainability
The shear strength parameters of loess samples are determined from conventional triaxial shear test results and used in the rational design of sustainable geotechnical infrastructures.
