Study of dilatancy behaviors of calcareous soils in a triaxial test

Marine georesources & geotechnology, 2018
In this article, the dilatancy of calcareous soil is studied systematically based on triaxial consolidation drainage shear tests, and the difference in dilatancy between calcareous soil and siliceous soil is also investigated.

Simulating Ballast Shear Strength from Large-Scale Triaxial Tests

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2013
The railroad ballast layer consists of discrete aggregate particles, and the discrete element method (DEM) is the most widely adopted numerical method to simulate the particulate nature of ballast materials and their particle interactions. Large-scale triaxial tests performed in the laboratory under controlled monotonic and repeated loading conditions

Effects of Shear Band Formation in Triaxial Extension Tests

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1996
Abstract The stress-strain and strength behavior from conventional triaxial extension tests is usually erratic due to excessive influence of necking in the hardening regime followed by shear banding. Two techniques have been attempted to impede the onset and gross development of strain localization. These resulted in macroscopically more

Shear fracture energy of Stripa granite- results of controlled triaxial testing

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1990
Abstract We have performed controlled triaxial experiments on Stripa granite in a ‘nearly stiff’ environment. This means that, before the commencement of loading, an initial confining pressure was ‘locked’ in the pressurizing chamber of the triaxial vessel.

Shear Stress and Pore Pressure in Triaxial Testing

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1965
The effects of frictional end restraint in triaxial testing may be avoided by using lubricated loading platens or segmental specimens. Segmental specimens consist of a central segment sandwiched between end segments that are sealed in a latex film. Pore pressures are measured only in the rather uniformly stressed central zone. Using this technique, the

Shear Band Formation in Triaxial and Plane Strain Tests

1988
This paper presents the results of a combined theoretical and laboratory study of the formation of shear bands in triaxial compression, triaxial extension, and plane strain compression. The principal finding is that shear bands are initiated more easily under plane strain than under axially symmetric conditions of the triaxial test.

Energy Components During the Triaxial Cell and Direct Shear Tests

Géotechnique, 1964
Synopsis The components of energy loss during a triaxial cell test are examined critically. It is shown that the stress dilatancy equation may be derived by inserting a modified cell pressure into the Bishop energy correction. The physical reason for this is discussed and the correct solution is derived in three different ways.
