Strip loading in reinforced concrete: Mechanical modeling and experimental validation

open access: yesStructural Concrete, EarlyView.
Abstract Strip loading of reinforced concrete is a common problem in engineering practice. The concrete compressive strength at the load introduction can be several times higher than the uniaxial concrete compressive strength, which can be attributed to geometrical and passive confining stresses caused by load dispersion and reinforcement, respectively.

Modeling locally corroded reinforced concrete structures in non‐linear finite element analyses

open access: yesStructural Concrete, EarlyView.
Abstract The ingress of chlorides, originating from the use of de‐icing salts or proximity to the sea, may cause severe local reinforcement corrosion in concrete structures such as bridges, tunnels, galleries, and retaining walls. Methods are urgently required to realistically assess the load‐bearing capacity of such deteriorated structures, accounting

Compression–tension cell with sample manipulator for in situ X‐ray nanotomography experiments

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, EarlyView.
An environmental cell with fluid flow‐through capability for performing in situ nano‐mechanical experiments at X‐ray nanotomography beamlines and a sample manipulator for mounting nanotomography samples are described. In situ X‐ray nanotomography experiments where tensile or compressive force is applied on the sample require specialized equipment.

Reviewing seas of data: Integrating image‐based bio‐logging and artificial intelligence to enhance marine conservation

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Conservation of marine ecosystems can be improved through a better understanding of ecosystem functioning, particularly the cryptic underwater behaviours and interactions of marine predators. Image‐based bio‐logging devices (including images, videos and active acoustic) are increasingly used to monitor wildlife movements, foraging behaviours ...
