Tests of Soils on Triaxial Device
Key Engineering Materials, 2020The paper briefly describes the methods for testing soils by triaxial compression. Among the many mechanical characteristics of the soil, deformation and strength properties remain as the main and widely used ones, the determination of which is an important experimental task.

Triaxial Testing of Weak Rocks Including the Use of Triaxial Extension Tests
1988The strength parameters of New Zealand Tertiary weak rocks are found to be intermediate between soil and rock. The nonlinear strength envelopes of these materials for the range of stresses encountered in engineering structures mean that the strength parameters cannot be adequately defined using standard triaxial compression tests.

Mechanics of the Triaxial Test for Soils [PDF]
Triaxial test is analyzed against background of plastic theory; it is shown that equilibrium conditions and failure criterion such as Coulomb's law are insufficient to define unique failure load, stress-strain relationship is also needed; problem is solved completely for ideally plastic material; significance of test data for sands and alternative ...

A triaxial swelling test apparatus
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1993This paper describes a new triaxial swelling test apparatus, and presents some of its applications to testing procedures. The apparatus was developed to simulate in-situ stress state in laboratory specimens, and to determine the three-dimensional swelling characteristics of clay-bearing rocks.

Dynamic Triaxial Test on Sand [PDF]
Triaxial experiments are a common method for measuring shear strength. Usually the loading in the shear phase in these experiments are done at a quasi-static rate but in many real instances the loading is dynamic in nature. Therefore, a triaxial setup has been developed based on a Kolsky bar experimental technique to characterize the shear response of ...

Development of a Portable Triaxial Testing Apparatus—Smart Triaxial
2013Reported in this paper are the design concept and performance of a light-weight triaxial apparatus that is portable, being contained in carrying bags and is nicknamed Smart Triaxial. It works with power supplied through AC 100 V or DC 24 V. The apparatus consists of (1) triaxial chamber combined with a loading system, (2) piston pumps supplying cell ...

Membrane Penetration in Triaxial Tests
Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1992Abstract Volumetric deformations of triaxial specimens of sand measured with a burette are burdened with an error caused by a rubber membrane penetrating into the peripheral voids of the specimen. This effect is of the same order of magnitude as volumetric deformation of the soil skeleton and should be eliminated.

Membrane Penetration in Triaxial Tests
Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division, 1982Interpretation of data of the writers and other investigators relating to volume changes due to membrane penetration in sands of different grain sizes has led to the following conclusions: 1. Volume changes due to membrane penetration are influenced by the following primary factors: (a) Grain size; (b) effective confining pressure; (c) density index ...

Permeability Testing in the Triaxial Cell
Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1986Abstract It has been suggested that a triaxial shear test chamber can be used to measure the permeability of low permeability soils. To verify this, the influence of a number of test parameters on the measured coefficient of permeability was investigated.
