Triaxial instabilities in rapidly rotating Neutron Stars

open access: yes, 2018
Viscosity driven bar mode secular instabilities of rapidly rotating neutron stars are studied using LORENE/Nrotstar code. These instabilities set a more rigorous limit to the rotation frequency of neutron star than the Kepler frequency/mass shedding ...

Study on the failure mechanism of the shield excavation face in the sandy cobble stratum under different buried depths

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract One of the significant challenges faced in shield tunnel construction is the risk of collapse resulting from abrupt changes in soil conditions in advance of the working face, particularly within the sandy cobble stratum. This study aims to effectively manage these sudden variations and to further investigate the failure mechanisms associated ...

A multifunctional shear apparatus for rocks subjected to true triaxial stress and high temperature in real-time

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
Deep engineering disasters, such as rockbursts and collapses, are more related to the shear slip of rock joints. A novel multifunctional device was developed to study the shear failure mechanism in rocks. Using this device, the complete shear–deformation

Intrinsic Axis Ratio Distribution of Early-type Galaxies From Sloan Digital Sky Survey [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5, we have investigated the intrinsic axis ratio distribution (ARD) for early-type galaxies. We have constructed a volume-limited sample of 3,922 visually-inspected early-type galaxies at $0.05 \leq z \leq 0.06$

Effect of confining pressure on fracture characteristics and mineralogical behavior of tight sandstone specimens after hydraulic fracturing

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Hydraulic fracturing in tight sandstone and fracture propagation characteristics using backscattered electron‐scanning electron microscope (BSE‐SEM) images. Abstract This study focuses on hydraulic fracturing experiments conducted under triaxial conditions on tight sandstone specimens from Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Experimental artefacts in undrained triaxial testing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
For evaluation of the undrained thermo-poro-elastic properties of saturated porous materials in conventional triaxial cells, it is important to take into account the effect of the dead volume of the drainage system.

A constant limiting mass scale for flat early-type galaxies from z=1 to z=0: density evolves but shapes do not [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We measure the evolution in the intrinsic shape distribution of early-type galaxies from z~1 to z~0 by analyzing their projected axis-ratio distributions.

Creep properties and constitutive model of diabase in deep water conveyance tunnels

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The axial and lateral creep characteristics of diabase were analyzed based on compression creep tests. The nonlinear viscoelastic‐plastic model capable of describing the whole creep process was established based on the fractional derivative and damage theories.
