Creep properties and constitutive model of diabase in deep water conveyance tunnels

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The axial and lateral creep characteristics of diabase were analyzed based on compression creep tests. The nonlinear viscoelastic‐plastic model capable of describing the whole creep process was established based on the fractional derivative and damage theories.

The strongest gravitational lenses: I. The statistical impact of cluster mergers

open access: yes, 2012
For more than a decade now, it has been controversial whether or not the high rate of giant gravitational arcs and the largest observed Einstein radii are consistent with the standard cosmological model.

Failure characteristics and the energy criterion of rock with a through‐going joint under true‐triaxial unloading conditions: Insights from the DEM model

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The rock failure mode is significantly influenced by the contributing factors, such as the joint inclination, the initial confining pressure, and the unloading point. We found six typical rock failure modes after a large number of numerical tests. Abstract Excavation unloading damages rock masses, with preferential failure along geological defects in ...

A review on rockburst prediction and prevention to shape an ontology‐based framework for better decision‐making for underground excavations

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
A scientometric analysis of 2449 journal articles and a comprehensive review of 336 papers were conducted, discussing and identifying challenges and research gaps in rockburst prediction and prevention and proposing an ontology‐based framework for better decision‐making in underground excavations. Abstract With underground engineering projects becoming

Geotechnical Behaviour of a Malaysian Residual Granite Soil [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Granite soil is widely distributed in Peninsular Malaysia. Steep terrain, heavy seasonal rainfall and deep tropical weathering are the main causes of numerous slope failures in this formation. Information on the shear strength of soil and its behaviour

The asymmetric structure of the Galactic halo

open access: yes, 2006
Using the stellar photometry catalogue based on the latest data release (DR4) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), a study of the Galactic structure using star counts is carried out for selected areas of the sky.

Permeability of granite from a shallow buried mountain pipe gallery tunnel under unloading confining pressure

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Triaxial compression tests under unloading confining pressure conditions were conducted to systematically analyze the permeability behavior of granite retrieved from the different classification surrounding rocks. Abstract The rock mass within mountain tunnels undergoes complex changes in permeability, strength, and deformation during tunneling ...
