How Does Heterogeneity Control Strain Localization Patterns in High‐Porosity Rocks?

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract We aim to explore how heterogeneous porosity and grain size contribute to strain localization patterns in highly porous rocks based on phase‐field simulations. The strain localization patterns, including shear bands, dilatation bands, and compaction bands, are commonly observed in geological field studies and laboratory experiments.

High Temperature Friction and Strength of Felsite and Basalt: Implications for Supercritical EGS at Krafla, Iceland

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract One promising potential site for extracting supercritical geothermal fluids is the Krafla volcano, Iceland, into which a borehole was drilled very close to a shallow rhyolite magma chamber at about 2 km depth. Besides the technical challenge to drill in this setting, the extreme temperature conditions of T > 900°C close to the magma body may ...

Relationships of Cognitive Function With Subsequent Device‐Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Time in Healthy Individuals and Those With Bipolar Disorder: Findings From the UK Biobank

open access: yesActa Psychiatrica Scandinavica, Volume 153, Issue 5, Page 490-499, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Background In bipolar disorder (BD), physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour are prevalent and have been linked to BD's cognitive symptoms, although the directionality of these links is not clear. This proof‐of‐concept study examined whether cognitive function during mid‐ and later‐life was prospectively related to physical activity and ...

Computational Investigation on the Combined Effect of Applied Strain and Pore Configuration on Strain Concentrators in Additively Manufactured Metals

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, Volume 49, Issue 5, Page 1656-1679, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Metal additive manufacturing (AM) provides a pathway for creating highly optimized components that would be difficult to produce using traditional manufacturing methods. However, regardless of printing parameters or postprocessing, porosity remains a prevalent challenge in AM components because strain concentrates in the vicinity of the pore ...
