Triaxial Testing Methodology for Gassy Soils

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2023
ABSTRACT Small amounts of gas occur in almost every sediment in marine or coastal environments. In past studies, a negative influence of gas on the mechanical properties of soil was associated with geohazard occurrence and dike safety in tide affected areas.

Triaxial Tests on Cataclasites

Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, 2014
The Semmering Base Tunnel, a major railway tunnel project in Austria with a length of around 27.3 km was to be constructed through significant fault zones. The geotechnical parameters of the cataclasites especially in combination with high ground water pressure were of high importance for the geotechnical tunnel design.

Cubical Triaxial Tests on Cohesionless Soil

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1973
A new type of cubical triaxial apparatus was used for an investigation of the influence of the intermediate principle stress on the drained stress-strain and strength characteristics of sand. For the same value of the minor principle stress and increasing value of the intermediate principle stress, both dense and loose specimens showed increasing slope

Triaxial Tests of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete

Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, 2001
This paper presents results of an extensive experimental parametric study of the mechanical response of various types of fiber-reinforced concrete tested under triaxial stress combinations. The objective of this study was to characterize the constitutive properties of these materials, with respect to fiber type and content, load path, condition at ...

Discrete element method simulations on triaxial test and triaxial creep tests

2014
Numerical triaxial simulations using the discrete element method (DEM) were performed to examine how the adopted contact models and the associated parameters affect the response. The increase in the shear modulus G in the Hertz-Mindlin’s contact model can enhance the small-strain Young’s modulus and reduce the initial volumetric contraction but the ...

Triaxial Testing of Weak Rocks Including the Use of Triaxial Extension Tests

1988
The strength parameters of New Zealand Tertiary weak rocks are found to be intermediate between soil and rock. The nonlinear strength envelopes of these materials for the range of stresses encountered in engineering structures mean that the strength parameters cannot be adequately defined using standard triaxial compression tests.

Triaxial tests on crushed ice

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 1996
Abstract To investigate the strength and the deformation behaviour of crushed ice, triaxial tests were performed. Crushed ice is formed during ice-structure interaction by extensive damage of polycrystalline ice near the structure. The effects of the confining pressure and the rate of loading are studied.

Triaxial testing beyond yielding

2017
This paper is continuation of work published at ISOPE 2015, where capabilities of undrained triaxial testing were presented. Now, drained loading is emphasized, recovery of disturbed sand properties is observed. After liquefying or yielding, sand becomes disturbed: stiffness and resistance to liquefaction become compromised.

Development of a Portable Triaxial Testing Apparatus—Smart Triaxial

2013
Reported in this paper are the design concept and performance of a light-weight triaxial apparatus that is portable, being contained in carrying bags and is nicknamed Smart Triaxial. It works with power supplied through AC 100 V or DC 24 V. The apparatus consists of (1) triaxial chamber combined with a loading system, (2) piston pumps supplying cell ...
