Abstract Background Jointed appendages represent one of the key innovations of arthropods, and thus understanding the development and evolution of these structures is important for the understanding of the evolutionary success of Arthropoda. In this paper, we analyze a cell cluster that was identified in a previous single‐cell sequencing (SCS ...

TrOn: An Anatomical Ontology for the Beetle Tribolium castaneum
In a morphological ontology the expert's knowledge is represented in terms, which describe morphological structures and how these structures relate to each other. With the assistance of ontologies this expert knowledge is made processable by machines, through a formal and standardized representation of terms and their relations to each other.

The cys-loop ligand-gated ion channel gene superfamily of the red flour beetle,
Background Members of the cys-loop ligand-gated ion channel (cys-loop LGIC) superfamily mediate chemical neurotransmission and are studied extensively as potential targets of drugs used to treat neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

TcALS knockdown accelerates metamorphosis via insulin signaling in Tribolium castaneum
RNAi silencing of TcALS accelerates larva‐to‐pupa metamorphosis in Tribolium castaneum. Abstract Insect metamorphosis is an evolutionary adaptation precisely regulated by nutritional and hormonal cues. The red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum, a major stored‐product pest, serves as an excellent model for studying this process.

Rapid trait evolution drives increased speed and variance in experimental range expansions
Spatial structure provides unique opportunities for evolution during range expansions. Here, the authors show experimentally using the red flour beetle,Tribolium castaneum, that dispersal and growth can evolve through spatial processes, increasing ...

Emerging experimental and bioinformatic approaches in RNA interference‐based pest control research
Double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) visualization, RNA‐induced silencing complex (RISC)‐bound sRNA‐seq and RNA degradomics allow investigating dsRNA uptake and processing, guide small interfering RNA selection and RISC‐mediated target mRNA cleavages. Transcriptomic and proteomic profiles of genome‐wide responses to dsRNA, including off‐target and compensatory ...
