Status and conservation of manatees Trichechus manatus manatus in Costa Rica

Biological Conservation, 1995
Aerial and boat surveys and interviews of coastal residents of Costa Rica suggest that manatees Trichechus manatus manatus are rare, even in regions such as Tortuguero, where they were reported to be fairly numerous in the recent past. Causes of the apparent decline have been suggested by local residents to include illegal hunting, high levels of ...

Bipolaris hawaiiensis as an emerging cause of cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis in an Antillean manatee Trichechus manatus manatus

Diseases of Aquatic Organisms, 2015
Phaeohyphomycoses are emerging and opportunistic diseases caused by dematiaceous fungi that infect many animal species. This paper describes a case of cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis in an Antillean manatee Trichechus manatus manatus caused by Bipolaris hawaiiensis.

ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY IN TWO SUBSPECIES OF MANATEE (TRICHECHUS MANATUS LATIROSTRIS AND T. M. MANATUS)

Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2006
Electrocardiographic (ECG) measurements were recorded in two subspecies of awake, apparently healthy, wild manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris and T. m. manatus) undergoing routine field examinations in Florida and Belize. Six unsedated juveniles (dependent and independent calves) and 6 adults were restrained in ventral recumbency for ECG ...

Thoracolumbar kyphoscoliosis in a captive geriatric Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus)

Journal of Comparative Pathology
Vertebral column deviations, namely scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis and combinations thereof, are poorly characterized in marine mammals. Here we present the clinical history and the post-mortem pathological and computed tomography (CT) scan analysis results on a 52-year-old captive female Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) from Brazil.

The role of touch in captive and semi-captive Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus)

Behaviour, 2021
Abstract Tactile signals have been neglected in aquatic animal studies despite being a major communication modality. We investigated Antillean manatees’ tactile behavioural repertoire and budget in captivity (7-females and 4-males) and semi-captivity (4-males) in Brazil.

Case report on helminth parasites of a necropsied Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) in Belize

Veterinary Parasitology: Regional Studies and Reports, 2020
Sirenians are parasitized by a number of nematodes and trematodes, most which appear to be host specific. Reports of parasitism in the West Indian Manatee, Trichechus manatus, exist for several regions within the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea, but there is a lack of parasitic data existing for the manatee subspecies living ...

Hematology of the West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus)

Veterinary Clinical Pathology, 1982
SummaryHemograms on blood obtained from 10 clinically normal West Indian Manatees (Trichechus manatus) were studied. The red cells were large and in lower number than in most terrestrial species. The manatee does not have a neutrophil as is present in most species, but it has a heterophil whose granules stain pink with the Wright‐Giemsa stain. The ...

Trichechus manatus latirostris (Manatee)

1977
Lymphocyte cultures were used for these karyotypes which were kindly donated by Dr. D.A. Duffield, Los Angeles, California. They come from Florida manatees and pairing is arbitrary, following that of White et al. (1976). Only one previous manatee, T. inunguis has been studied with 2n=56 (Loughman et al., 1970).
