Abstract Total Suspended Solids (TSS) significantly degrade water quality by reducing light penetration and oxygen availability, while facilitating the transport of toxic contaminants. Managing TSS in watersheds requires an understanding of both hydrological connectivity and pollutant dynamics; however, these efforts are significantly constrained by ...

Censusing manatees: a report on the feasibility of using aerial surveys and mark and recapture techniques to conduct a population survey of the West Indian Manatee [PDF]
This report results from an invitation to review the needs and prospects for capture-recapture and aerial census studies of the manatee (Trichechus manatus) in Florida. Three aerial reconnaissance flights provided a first hand view of manatee habitats,

Diet of the manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus) in Chetumal Bay, Mexico
Manatees, as well as other sirenians, are aquatic, opportunistic herbivores. Knowledge of their diet is important to determine habitat requirements. This is the first study of manatee diet in Mexico. Our main objective was to identify the plant species eaten by manatees in Chetumal Bay, and to establish if diet composition varied by climatic season ...

The Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis) faces threats like habitat loss, illegal hunting, and pollution. Our analysis of 54 rescued manatees in a Peruvian Amazon rehabilitation center revealed that initial weight and rate of weight gain significantly influenced survival during rehabilitation, while intestinal obstruction, often from prior ...

Seasonal Movements, Migratory Behavior, and Site Fidelity of West Indian Manatees along the Atlantic Coast of the United States as Determined by Radio-telemetry [PDF]
The study area encompassed the eastern coasts of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, including inland waterways such as the St. Johns River (Fig. 1). Manatees inhabited the relatively narrow band of water that lies between the barrier beaches and the

Distribution and conservation status of the Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) in Honduras [PDF]
The Antillean manatee, Trichechus manatus manatus, is among the most threatened mammals in Honduras, yet the last published study is from 1980. Since then, the North Coast of Honduras has experienced rapid population growth and land cover change possibly causing habitat loss for manatees.

ABSTRACT Habitat selection is a fundamental aspect of animal movement and behaviour, involving strategies that influence population regulation, species interactions, community structure and the generation and preservation of biodiversity. The Greater Caribbean Manatee is a megaherbivorous aquatic mammal with high environmental plasticity, found in a ...

We present an approach for estimating wildlife abundance from unstructured aerial surveys. We combine a spatial model for count data with auxiliary information on detection probability. This framework is intended to be flexible, requiring lower survey costs and less computation time than other alternatives for estimating abundance.
