The Effect of Furazolidone on Pigeon Trichomoniasis Due to Trichomonas gallinae

The Journal of Parasitology, 1957
The nitrofuran, furazolidone, when administered at appropriate levels, has been shown to enhance the growth of chickens by Harwood and Stunz (1954), by Berg, Hamilton, and Bearse (1955), and by Libby and Schaible (1955). Francis and Shaffner (1955) reported it to have no adverse effects on egg-production, hatchability, or shell-quality.

Molecular Characterization of the Trichomonas gallinae Morphologic Complex in the United States

Journal of Parasitology, 2008
Forty-two Trichomonas gallinae isolates were molecularly characterized to determine whether isolates differed in genetic sequence of multiple gene targets depending on host species or geographical location. The 5.8S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and flanking internal transcribed spacer (ITS) gene regions were amplified by polymerase chain reaction, and the ...

Trichomonas gallinae: a possible contact-dependent mechanism in the hemolytic activity

Veterinary Parasitology, 2002
The in vitro hemolytic activity of Trichomonas gallinae was investigated. The parasite was tested against human erythrocytes of groups A, B, AB, and O, and against erythrocytes of six adult animals of different species (rabbit, rat, chicken, horse, bovine, and sheep). Results showed that T.

Discovery of a novel dsRNA virus in Trichomonas gallinae

2022
Trichomonas gallinae is a single-celled protozoan parasite and causative agent of avian trichomonosis, canker or frounce. While a majority of infected birds are asymptomatic, it can be deadly and is the cause of huge die-offs and population declines representing an existential threat to some avian species.
