Trichophyton Rubrum Perifolliculitis on Amputation Stump

A case ofTrichophyton rubrumperifolliculitis on an amputation stump is reported. An occlusive plastic prosthesis predisposed to infection at this site. Histopathologic examination revealed numerous intrafollicular and perifollicular spores lying in masses and singly. Some of the individual spores exhibited radiate body formation. We believe that patients are genetically predisposed to Trichophyton rubrum infections in a dominant autosomal pattern and that persons with distal subungual onychomycosis caused by T. rubrum invariably have preexisting T. rubrum tinea pedis of the soles.
