Climate and hybridization shape stomatal trait evolution in Populus

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 2, Page 792-809, January 2026.
Summary Stomata play a critical role in regulating plant responses to climate. Where sister species differ in stomatal traits, interspecific gene flow can influence the evolutionary trajectory of trait variation, with consequences for adaptation. Leveraging six latitudinally distributed contact zones spanning the natural hybrid zone between Populus ...

Physiological roles of lignins – tuning cell wall hygroscopy and biomechanics

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 6, Page 2674-2706, December 2025.
Summary Lignins constitute the second most abundant carbon‐storing biopolymers in the biosphere. These phenolic polymers accumulate in different concentrations, compositions, and localisations within and between cell wall layers and cell types. Lignins were acquired during plant terrestrialisation 450 million years ago, and the diversification of their

Aspects of leaf anatomy of kudzu (Pueraria lobata, Leguminosae-Faboideae) related to water and energy balance Aspectos da anatomia foliar de Pueraria lobata (Leguminosae-Faboideae) associados ao balanço de água e de energia

open access: yesPesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira, 1999
Kudzu is a cover crop that has escaped cultivation in some subtropical and warm temperate regions. Kudzu has previously demonstrated broad intraspecific physiological plasticity while colonizing new environments.

Arabidopsis thaliana exhibits wide within‐species variation in tolerance to boron limitation and root and shoot trait resilience associate with a pleiotropic locus

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 5, Page 2444-2465, December 2025.
Summary To improve plant tolerance to suboptimal availability of the micronutrient boron (B), it is crucial to understand the mechanisms plants have evolved to tolerate B‐limited conditions. We assessed temporal physiological, ionomic and molecular responses to B deficiency across 185 Arabidopsis thaliana accessions grown in soil‐substrate in an ...

Unlocking grass leaf development: foundations for tunable cereal design

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 4, Page 1655-1676, November 2025.
Summary The grass leaf plays a critical role in global food security, generating the carbon stores in cereal grains, which provide > 50% of global calories. As the global population grows, there is an urgent need to increase food production using fewer resources and to develop more resilient agricultural systems to withstand variable climate conditions

Morphological and micromorphological characteristics of Desmodium fruits (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae)

open access: yesRevista de Biología Tropical, 2014
The genus Desmodium is represented in Santa Catarina State, Brazil, by 13 species, all with lomentaceous fruits. Shape, size and isthmus margin of loments vary, while the surface is glabrous, or covered by trichomes of different types.
