Triggered lightning in New Mexico

Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1984
Triggered lightning experiments with rockets pulling a grounded wire were performed at Langmuir Laboratory in 1981. Out of 56 firings, 35 events were triggered among which 29 had a peak current intensity above 2 kA and 27 were hybrid flashes. The highest current peak is 40 kA±10%.

Artificially triggered lightning above land

Nature, 1975
LIGHTNING has been triggered artificially in the Massif Central by launching small rockets carrying a thin steel wire connected to the ground. During two investigations in 1973 and 1974, a total of 20 triggerings have been achieved. Photographic evidence establishes the existence of two kinds of luminous object, lasting several tenths of a second ...

What triggers lightning bolts?

New Scientist, 2013
We know that a lightning bolt is four times hotter than the surface of the sun, but we don't know what triggers that bolt to shoot down from storm clouds. Russian physicist Alexandr Gurevich is on a mission to solve the mystery – and what he's found is out of this world.

Experiment of artificially triggered lightning to lightning rod and semiconductor lightning eliminator

2004 Asia-Pacific Radio Science Conference, 2004. Proceedings., 2005
In the summer of 1998 and 1999, the experiments of triggered lightning aimed at testing and comparing the function of conventional type of lightning rod and the so-called semiconductor lightning eliminator (SLE) were conducted in Guangzhou, southern China.

Energetic Radiation Produced During Rocket-Triggered Lightning

Science, 2003
Using a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector designed to operate in electrically noisy environments, we observed intense bursts of energetic radiation (≫10 kiloelectron volts) during the dart leader phase of rocket-triggered lightning, just before and possibly at the very start of 31 out of the 37 return strokes measured.

Statistics on artificially triggered lightning

Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1994
The Faculté Polytechnique of Mons has participated in the last three programs of artificially triggered lightning in Saint‐Privat d'Allier, France (1986, 1990, and 1991). Measurements of the vertical part of the electric field E and electric field derivative (dE/dt) only 50 m from the discharge were made in 1990 and 1991.

Rocket-triggered lightning and new insights into lightning

2010
The rocket-and-wire technique has been routinely used since the 1970s to artificially initiate (trigger) lightning from natural thunderclouds for purposes of research and testing. Leader/return stroke sequences in triggered lightning are similar in most (if not all) respects to subsequent leader/return-stroke sequences in natural downward lightning and

Cargo ships trigger lightning storms

New Scientist, 2017
Joel Thornton at the University of Washington in Seattle and his colleagues looked at records of lightning strikes between 2005 and 2016 and noticed there were significantly more strikes in certain regions of the east Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, compared with the surrounding areas.

Rocket-triggered lightning: Modeling of trigger-wire corona effects

2010 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2010
For the first time, a model gives due consideration to the effect of space charge produced by trigger-wire glow-corona on continuous upward leader onset, in rocket triggered lightning under negative cloud.
