Characterizing Radio Frequency Magnetic Radiation of Initial Upward Leader Stepping in Triggered Lightning With Interferometric Lightning Mapping

Geophysical Research Letters, 2020
In summer of 2019, the bandwidth of magnetic field sensor with relatively high sensitivity was extended to 1.2 MHz during the triggered lightning experiment of Field Experiment Base on Lightning Sciences, China Meteorological Administration (CMA‐FEBLS ...

Characteristics of Impulsive Currents Superimposing on Continuous/Continuing Current of Rocket-Triggered Lightning

IEEE transactions on electromagnetic compatibility (Print), 2020
Characteristics and mechanism of initial continuous current (ICC) pulses and M components in rocket-triggered lightning were investigated in detailed. The geometric mean current peak, risetime from 10% to 90% peak, half-peak width, and charge transfer of

Triggered Lightning Spectroscopy: 2. A Quantitative Analysis

Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres, 2019
In the mid 1960s, researchers laid the foundation for modern quantitative lightning spectroscopy. They were the first to acquire time‐resolved return stroke spectra and the first to use spectroscopy as a diagnostic technique to characterize the physical ...

A Study of the Effects of Triggered Lightning.

1984
Abstract : The characteristics of lightning, artificially induced by wire-trailing rockets were measured in a cooperative program involving investigators from France, from the Flight Hazards Branch of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and from New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology.

Triggered lightning in New Mexico

Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1984
Triggered lightning experiments with rockets pulling a grounded wire were performed at Langmuir Laboratory in 1981. Out of 56 firings, 35 events were triggered among which 29 had a peak current intensity above 2 kA and 27 were hybrid flashes. The highest current peak is 40 kA±10%.

Rocket-triggered lightning and new insights into lightning

2010
The rocket-and-wire technique has been routinely used since the 1970s to artificially initiate (trigger) lightning from natural thunderclouds for purposes of research and testing. Leader/return stroke sequences in triggered lightning are similar in most (if not all) respects to subsequent leader/return-stroke sequences in natural downward lightning and

Lightning triggers nuclear reactions

C&EN Global Enterprise, 2017
Nearly 100 years ago, physicists proposed that high-energy processes occurring during thunderstorms might trigger nuclear reactions.

Artificially triggered lightning above land

Nature, 1975
LIGHTNING has been triggered artificially in the Massif Central by launching small rockets carrying a thin steel wire connected to the ground. During two investigations in 1973 and 1974, a total of 20 triggerings have been achieved. Photographic evidence establishes the existence of two kinds of luminous object, lasting several tenths of a second ...
