Observations of the relationship between sprite morphology and in-cloud lightning processes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
[1] During a thunderstorm on 23 July 2003, 15 sprites were captured by a LLTV camera mounted at the observatory on Pic du Midi in the French Pyrénées.

Quantification of Risk Reduction Due to the Installation of Different Lightning Protection Solutions for Large Atmospheric Storage Tanks

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2014
In the past decades the impact of natural events in industrial plants have triggered a number of technological accidents. Accidents may be followed by the release of relevant quantities of hazardous substances, with relevant consequences for the ...

Laser-triggered lightning discharge

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2002
Advances in ultrafast optics in recent years have revived a keen interest in laser-induced dielectric breakdown study. While it is widely accepted that femtosecond laser pulses with peak powers reaching gigawatts can propagate over tens of metres under laboratory conditions, the dynamics underlying this highly nonlinear phenomenon is yet not fully ...

Wave Profile for Current Bearing Antiforce Waves [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
For fluid dynamical analysis of breakdown waves, we employ a one-dimensional, three-component (electrons, ions and neutral particles) fluid model to describe a steady-state, ionizing wave propagating counter to strong electric fields.

Equipment Failure Probability due to the Impact of Lightning

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2012
The historical analysis of accidental scenarios triggered by lightning shows that the impact of a lightning on a process plant might be the initiating event of a severe accident.

Acoustic localization of triggered lightning [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research, 2011
[1] We use acoustic (3.3–500 Hz) arrays to locate local ( 6 km) the error increases to 800 m for the nearest neighbors and 650 m for the Monte Carlo analysis. This work shows that thunder sources can be accurately located using acoustic signals.

Calcium Shock Enables Efficient and Programmable Particle Delivery for Genome Editing Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Classical transfection and transduction are inefficient, particularly with confluent cells and organoids, and lack cell type‐specific programmability. This study presents calcium shock (CaSh), a method that dramatically improves particle delivery into single cells, colonies, and organoids.
