Validation of the SMAP freeze/thaw product using categorical triple collocation
2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017Landscape freeze/thaw (FT) state is a key variable in Earth's carbon cycle. NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite mission, launched in January 2015, provides global retrievals of FT state every two to three days. Validating SMAP FT observations with in-situ observations is difficult due to the substantial scale mismatch between a point ...

Extended Categorical Triple Collocation for Evaluating Sea Ice/Open Water Data Sets
IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2021A method to extend categorical triple collocation (CTC) to five data sets, three of which must have conditionally independent errors, is presented. The method is shown to enable comparison of three passive microwave sea ice concentration data sets, and can easily be extended to for use with more data sets.

Triple collocation: Beyond three estimates and separation of structural/non-structural errors
Remote Sensing of Environment, 2015Abstract This study extends the popular triple collocation method for error assessment from three source estimates to an arbitrary number of source estimates, i.e., to solve the “multiple” collocation problem. Past efforts on multiple collocation fall short of delivering a well-defined, well-interpreted and unique solution thus may result in ...

Influence of Spatial Heterogeneity in Error Characterization Using Triple Collocation
Accurate error characterization is essential for validating satellite-based geophysical products. Triple Collocation (TC) estimates random error variances of three mutually independent datasets but assumes a common spatial scale—a condition rarely met in practice.Diksha Gupta +1 more
