Hematological Abnormalities in Triploidy

Triploidy is a common cause of abortion and stillbirth. The incidence in live births is less than 1 in 20,000.1Our investigation of a liveborn infant with 69,XXY karyotype disclosed certain hematological abnormalities that may be unique to this syndrome. The possible diagnostic value of these findings prompts this report.

Ocular Findings in Triploidy

We studied the abnormal ocular and systemic findings in one case of true triploidy and two cases of triploid mosaicism. A liveborn triploid child 69,XXY, had abnormalities including cebocephaly, a single midline nostril, incomplete cleft palate, transverse palmar creases, partial syndactyly, and ambiguous genitalia.

A triploid male infant, born after 39 weeks gestation, is described. Malformations included severe physical retardation, syndactyly, microphthalmia with coloboma, macroglossia, hypospadias, a small penis and intra-abdominal testes. A 69, XXY karyotype was consistently found in cultures of peripheral blood, skin and muscle from left and right sides.

SummaryA seven‐year‐old male cat developed a subcutaneous fibrosarcoma. The numerical cytogenetic evaluation of the tumour revealed the presence of 69.2% of cells in the near‐triploid chromosome range between 51 and 64. The copy numbers of the different chromosomes were widely distributed from monosomies up to heptasomies.

Cytogenetic studies of a human amnion cell line (strain RA) indicate that the major stem cell was triploid. Consistently present in the triploid cells were two marker chromosomes, a small centric fragment, and an apparently telocentric D.
