Phylogeny of the hermit hummingbirds (trochilidae: Phaethornithinae)

Studies on Neotropical Fauna and Environment, 1997
Abstract A phylogeny of the hummingbirds of the genera Ramphodon, Eutoxeres, Glaucis, Threnetes, and Phaethornis is presented on the basis of external morphological characters. All 34 species of hermit hummingbirds are included in this study. Differences in 96 characters were examined with regard to their apomorphic (derived) or plesiomor‐phic ...

Encephalization in Hummingbirds (Trochilidae)

Brain, Behavior and Evolution, 2008
The brain mass in 23 hummingbird species was compared to that in galliform birds taking body mass into consideration. Hummingbird brain masses were determined by endocranial volumes, and their body masses were calculated from skeletal measurements. Galliform data were taken from a recent publication.

Classification of the Polytminae (Aves: Trochilidae)

Zootaxa, 2015
The subfamily Polytminae, as defined by Dickinson & Remsen (2013) using the phylogeny of McGuire et al. (2009), consists of 12 genera and 27 species of hummingbirds (Trochilidae) distributed widely in the Neotropics, including the Caribbean. McGuire et al. (2014) expanded greatly on the taxon- and gene-sampling in McGuire et al.

Phylogenetic Patterns in the Trochilidae

The Auk, 1998
-Although many aspects of hummingbird biology have been studied, few recent analyses of higher-level systematic relationships exist. Based on morphology, it has been hypothesized that the Trochilidae includes six major clades. We used starch-gel electrophoresis to construct and test phylogenetic hypotheses for representatives of the six clades, using ...
