PARASITIC SYSTEM OF SCRUB TYPHUS: CHIGGER MITES (ACARIFORMES, TROMBICULIDAE) AS VECTORS AND RESERVIOURS OF INFECTION IN SOUTH EAST ASIA

open access: yesMedical Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases, 2023
This review is dedicated to chigger mites (Trombiculidae) as vectors and reservoirs of infection in scrub typhus foci in South East Asia. Here we review biology, infection rates in natural and anthropurgic foci of scrub typhus.

Forest Matters Most for Hirsutiella zachvatkini (Schluger, 1948): A Survey of Rodent Infestation in Four Localities within the Mazury Lake District, NE Poland

open access: yesDiversity, 2023
The family Trombiculidae encompasses numerous and widespread mites, the larvae of which are obligatory parasites of vertebrates. Our research objective was to assess how trombiculid burdens on rodents inhabiting three forested and one open area in NE ...

Are whole‐organism performance and thermal preference linked to endo‐ and ectoparasites in a short‐lived lizard?

open access: yesEthology, Volume 129, Issue 8, Page 432-443, August 2023., 2023
We showed that parasitised and unparasitised garden skinks (Lampropholis guichenoti) did not differ in whole‐organism performance (endurance and foraging efficiency) or their thermal preference. However, sprint speed was negatively related to ectoparasite infection.

Morphological and molecular diagnosis of two new species of Trypanosoma Gruby, 1843 infecting South African cordylid lizards (Squamata: Cordylidae: Cordylinae), Trypanosoma (Squamatrypanum) ndumoensis n. sp. and Trypanosoma (Trypanosoma) tokoloshi n. sp.

open access: yesJournal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, Volume 70, Issue 4, July/August 2023., 2023
Abstract Despite reptile trypanosomes forming a large group, the majority of species descriptions are data deficient, lacking key characteristic data and supporting molecular data. Reptile hosts show potential to facilitate transmission of zoonotic trypanosomiases and offer key information to understanding the genus of Trypanosoma.

New records of chigger mites (Acariformes, Trombiculidae) from the Arabian Peninsula

open access: yesAcarina, 2023
First data on the chigger mites of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are obtained based on the material collected from alcohol-fixed specimens of the Arabian spiny mouse, Acomys dimidiatus (Cretzschmar), stored in a museum collection.

Host‐related and environmental factors influence long‐term ectoparasite infestation dynamics of mouse lemurs in northwestern Madagascar

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Primatology, Volume 85, Issue 6, June 2023., 2023
The study revealed significant yearly changes in ectoparasite infestation for (a) Haemaphysalis spp. (ticks), (b) Schoutendenichia microcebi (mites), (c) Lemurpediculus spp. (lice), and (d) ectoparasite species richness. Displayed is the proportion of ectoparasite occurrence (yes: in black, no: in gray, a–c) and the distribution of the ectoparasite ...

Cross‐reactivity between tick and wasp venom can contribute to frequent wasp sensitization in patients with the α‐Gal syndrome

open access: yesClinical and Translational Allergy, Volume 12, Issue 1, January 2022., 2022
Abstract Background α‐Gal syndrome (AGS) is a food allergy with severe delayed allergic reactions, mediated by IgE‐reactivity to galactose‐α1,3‐galactose (α‐Gal). AGS is strongly associated with tick bites. An increased incidence of venom sensitization has been found in AGS patients. Here, we evaluated the frequency of wasp sensitization in Swedish AGS

In Vivo Observation of Trombiculosis with Fluorescence–Advanced Videodermatoscopy

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2020
Trombiculosis is a skin infestation by larvae of mites of the Trombiculidae family. We used fluorescence–advanced videodermatoscopy to diagnose trombiculosis in a woman in Italy with targetoid patches. This method might be useful for identifying atypical

Additions to the chigger mite fauna (Acariformes: Trombiculidae) of Saudi Arabia, with the description of a new species

open access: yesAcarologia, 2023
Collections of chigger mites from murid rodents were performed in two bordering provinces of southwestern Saudi Arabia, Al Bahah and ‘Asir. A total of 561 chiggers belonging to 19 species were collected in 2020 and 2021 from 54 rodents of two species ...
