Quantifying the Dietary Overlap of Two Co‐Occurring Mammal Species Using DNA Metabarcoding to Assess Potential Competition

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Interspecific competition among co‐occurring species with similar resource requirements can be assessed by measuring diet overlap. A study on common brushtail possums and bush rats used DNA metabarcoding of faecal samples to quantify their dietary overlap, finding a significant similarity.

Reduced Streamflow From Water Diversion Alters Stream Ecology and Fish Behavior

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 41, Issue 3, Page 553-568, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Understanding invertebrate and fish responses to altered streamflows is important for water management that balances ecological function and societal needs. We studied the impacts of a significant water diversion on a stream food web, including benthic biofilms, benthic macroinvertebrates (BMI), and drifting macroinvertebrates.

Мікроартроподи консорцій дуба березівського лісництва Одеської області [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Мікроартроподи – основні організми, що беруть участь у ґрунтотвірних процесах, вони можуть бути індикаторами стану субстратів і об’єктами зоологічного моніторингу навколишнього середовища.

Environmental DNA supports importance of heterogeneous pond landscapes for arthropod diversity conservation

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2025.
Abstract Freshwater ponds host diverse arthropod communities, but conservation frameworks are scarce. Heterogeneous pond mosaics of various sizes and successional stages can develop during raw material extraction in mining sites, acting as refugia for a variety of species.

Macroinvertebrate abundance and distribution of hydrilla and ceratophyllum habitats in the Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) plays an important role in aquatic systems, providing shelter, breeding habitat, and epiphytic forage for numerous fishes and aquatic macroinvertebrates. Since 1960, many lentic habitats in the southern U.S.

Optimizing eDNA Metabarcoding Techniques for Assessing Arthropod Communities in Tree‐Related Microhabitats

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 1, January–February 2025.
This study highlights the significance of using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to study forest arthropods associated with tree‐related microhabitats (TreMs) and deadwood. We find that our tree surface sampling effectively captured ecologically significant arthropods associated with TreMs, exhibiting overlap with other deadwood sediment samples ...

Two New Species of Chiggers (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae) From Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Medical Entomology, 2021
AbstractChigger mites are parasites of terrestrial vertebrates, including humans. Here, we describe two new species belonging to the American genera Colicus Brennan and Parasecia Loomis. Both species were described on the base of museum specimens originated from Minas Gerais State, Brazil, Colicus barrosbattestiae n. sp.

Floodplain Restoration and Its Effects on Summer Water Temperature and Macroinvertebrates in Whychus Creek, Oregon (USA)

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 41, Issue 1, Page 37-55, January 2025.
ABSTRACT Stream restoration is a proposed climate adaptation tool; however, outcomes of floodplain restoration on stream temperature have been debated. Despite a growing number of studies that investigated water temperature in restored streams, few have quantified temperature variations in new habitat types created by restored hydrogeomorphic processes
