Is Doppler ultrasound useful for evaluating gestational trophoblastic disease?

open access: yesClinics
Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive method for evaluating vascularization and is widely used in clinical practice. Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia includes a group of highly vascularized malignancies derived from placental cells.

Gestational trophoblastic neoplasm and women living with HIV and/or AIDS

open access: yesSouthern African Journal of HIV Medicine, 2015
The 2011 World Health Organization global report on HIV and/or AIDS estimated that sub-Saharan Africa comprised 67% of the global HIV burden, with a current estimate of 5.9 million cases in South Africa. Since the introduction of antiretroviral therapy, there has been an increase in the incidence of non-AIDS-defining cancers.

Hsd3b1 as a Novel Trophoblast-Associated Marker That Assists in the Differential Diagnosis of Trophoblastic Tumors and Tumorlike Lesions

open access: yes, 2008
Trophoblastic tumors and tumorlike lesions can be confused with a variety of nontrophoblastic tumors; therefore, a trophoblast-associated marker that is expressed in all types of trophoblastic lesions is useful in differential diagnosis.

Leptin–cholesterol crosstalk in pregnancy: Mechanistic implications for placental function and cardiometabolic programming

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Pregnancy requires the coordinated maternal reorganization of lipid and endocrine pathways to sustain fetal growth and anticipate neonatal nutrition. Leptin, produced by adipose tissue and the placenta, acts as an integrative signal linking maternal energy status with trophoblast function and vascular adaptation, while cholesterol provides ...

Maternal nutrition as a key determinant of placental and developing blood–brain barrier xenobiotic protective functions

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Suboptimal maternal nutrition alters placental and developing blood–brain barrier (BBB) protective function and is associated with increased fetal brain vulnerability. In the placenta, nutritional adversity may reduce the exchange surface area and promote meta‐inflammation, compromising barrier efficiency in a model‐ and context ...

Homonymous Quadrantanopsia as the First Manifestation of Cerebral Metastasis of Invasive Mole: a case report

open access: yesJournal of Medical Case Reports, 2012
Introduction Homonymous quadrantanopsia results from retrochiasmal lesions in the visual pathway. Invasive mole is a benign tumor that arises from myometrial invasion of a hydatidiform mole via direct extension through tissue or venous channels. Cerebral

Ascending infection of Gardnerella spp. and compartmentalized inflammatory response in fetal–maternal interface organ‐on‐chip model

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The fetal–maternal interface organ‐on‐chip was used to investigate the ascending infection of Gardnerella spp. across the decidua (DEC), chorion trophoblast (CTC), amnion mesenchymal (AMC) and amnion epithelial (AEC) compartments over 48 h.

Serous Neoplasms

open access: yes, 2014
Although interest in pancreatic pathology is very high in the radiological and gastroenterological communities, it is still the case that less is known about pathology of the pancreas than about liver pathology, for example.

Pyroptosis in Preeclampsia: Placenta‐to‐Maternal Organ Communication, Molecular Mechanisms, and Therapeutic Targets

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 6, December 2026.
Schematic diagram illustrating the potential mechanisms and core molecules contributing to the development of PE via mediating pyroptosis: focus on trophoblasts and endothelial cells. Pyroptosis of trophoblast cells in the placenta of preeclampsia not only inhibits its invasion, migration, and differentiation, causing local infiltration and ...
