A simple and affordable protocol to assess censer seed dispersal: First confirmation of the mechanism in the genus Solanum

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise The censer seed dispersal mechanism, whereby mature fruits are retained on plants and seeds dispersed by mechanical shaking, is among the most specialized wind‐aided seed dispersal strategies employed by the flowering plants. An efficient, affordable, and easily repeatable protocol for determining whether a species uses this unusual ...

No constraint on long-term tropical land carbon-climate feedback uncertainties from interannual variability

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Unraveling drivers of the interannual variability of tropical land carbon cycle is critical for understanding land carbon-climate feedbacks. Here we utilize two generations of factorial model experiments to show that interannual variability of tropical ...

Coupling growth and mortality models to detect climate drivers of tropical forest dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Climate models for the coming century predict rainfall reduction in the Amazonian region, including deep changes in water availability for tropical rainforests.

Are there morpho‐acoustic patterns of adaptation in nonhuman primate ears? Testing the role of ecology and habitat in shaping ear morphology and function

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Analysis of the variation in the bony structures of the inner and middle ear provides critical insights into functional morphology, as well as adaptive morphology across primates. In this study, we investigated whether ear morphology patterns are related to the ecological characteristics of species and their habitats to test two acoustic ...

Under the Shade of a Coolabah Tree: A Second Cache of Tulas From the Boulia District, Western Queensland

open access: yesArchaeology in Oceania, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper reports on the excavation of a cache of stone artefacts, buried on the bank of a waterhole or ‘billabong’ in central western Queensland. This is an extremely rare find, and yet it is the second such site to be reported within less than a 10 km radius.

Long range transport of South and East Asian anthropogenic aerosols counteracting Arctic warming

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
The large-scale convection during the Asian summer monsoon plays an important role in the rapid transport of boundary layer aerosols into the Asian summer monsoon anticyclone. Here, using the state-of-the-art ECHAM6–HAMMOZ aerosol-chemistry-climate model,

Use of Restricted Nursing and a Bovine Appeasing Substance on the Welfare, Growth Performance, and Response to Vaccination of Beef Calves at Weaning

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
The effects of restricted nursing (RN) and the administration of a bovine appeasing substance (BAS) on days −8 and 0 in relation to weaning were evaluated. Both strategies were effective in improving the growth performance of beef calves. Regarding welfare, BAS ‐especially on day 0‐ was more effective than RN.

Heat Stress and Gut Microbiome Dynamics in Poultry: Interplay, Consequences, and Mitigation Strategies

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Heat stress disrupts gut microbial balance in poultry, impairing nutrient absorption and immunity. This review outlines the interplay between thermal stress and microbiome dynamics and discusses integrative mitigation strategies, probiotics, phytogenics, cooling systems, and genetic adaptation to enhance poultry resilience.
