When tiny convective spread affects a midlatitude jet: Spread sequence
We investigate spread evolution by mesoscale convection from tiny initial condition uncertainty during a real event. There is significant variation among the systems in their propensity to interact with the jet stream, whereby variability in one system (due to convective and long‐wave radiative heating tendencies) tightly relates to Rossby‐like ...

Statistical evidence links exceptional 1995 Atlantic hurricane season to record sea warming [PDF]
Tropical cyclones rank above earthquakes as the major geophysical cause of loss of life and property (Bryant, 1991; Houghton, 1994). In the United States alone, the damage bill from mainland landfalling hurricanes over the last 50 years averages $2.0 ...

Mesoscale dynamics of cyclone Leslie (2018): A diagnostic analysis of a rare Iberian landfall
This study presents a successful numerical simulation of cyclone Leslie (2018), using WRF‐ARW v4.5.1. Several mesoscale dynamics were identified indicative of the occurrence of sting jet and cold conveyor belt, which potentiated the record‐breaking winds in central Portugal.

An Iberia‐Central Mediterranean trough sequence (7–10 February 2018) delivers anomalous low‐level temperature tendencies attributable to dynamics across most of northern Africa, with warming over northeastern Africa, especially 10–12 February into the eastern Sahel. An ECMWF product attributes the tendencies (see Figure).

The 27–year decline of coral cover on the Great Barrier Reef and its causes [PDF]
This study investigates the spatial and temporal dynamics of coral cover, identifies the main drivers of coral mortality, and quantifies the rates of potential recovery of the Great Barrier Reef. The world’s coral reefs are being degraded, and the need to

October 2019 was characterized by three main multiday wet spells in Bafoussam and Dschang. Our results indicated that wet spells were influenced by a vortex pair near the Gulf of Guinea, a strong Sahara Heat Low located anomalously far east and north, a northward shift of the intertropical discontinuity, an enhancement of the inland penetration of the ...

A New Refinement of Mediterranean Tropical‐Like Cyclones Characteristics
Several warm‐core cyclones in the Mediterranean, which were analyzed in the literature, are studied using ERA5 reanalysis, to identify the environment where they develop and distinguish tropical‐like cyclones from non‐tropical warm‐core cyclones ...

Damage Costs of Climate Change through Intensification of Tropical Cyclone Activities: An Application of FUND. ESRI WP259, October 2008 [PDF]
Climate change may intensify tropical cyclone activities and amplify their negative economic effects. We simulate the direct economic impact of tropical cyclones enhanced by climate change with the integrated assessment model FUND 3.4.
