Global distribution of avian plumage coloration and patterning: the relative influence of climate, ecology, and sexual selection

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Animal coloration exhibits substantial biogeographic variation, reflecting complex adaptations to both abiotic and biotic environments. Although the evolutionary mechanisms underlying avian plumage coloration have been widely studied, geographic variation in plumage patterning has received far less attention.

Breeding switchgrass for reduced nitrogen demand

open access: yesGrassland Research, EarlyView.
Breeding has improved switchgrass biomass yield, but productivity is still heavily dependent on nitrogen fertilizer application. The genetic diversity needed to improve nitrogen use efficiency of switchgrass remains underused, mainly because of the slow and laborious breeding process, thus leaving the crop's high nitrogen demand as a major barrier to ...

Do Smallholder, Mixed Crop-Livestock Livelihoods Encourage Sustainable Agricultural Practices? A Meta-Analysis

open access: yesLand, 2016
As calls for bolstering ecosystem services from croplands have grown more insistent during the past two decades, the search for ways to foster these agriculture-sustaining services has become more urgent.

Fermentation characteristics, chemical composition and microbial community of tropical forage silage under different temperatures [PDF]

open access: yesAsian-Australasian Journal of Animal Sciences, 2019
Objective In tropical regions, as in temperate regions where seasonality of forage production occurs, well-preserved forage is necessary for animal production during periods of forage shortage.

Modeling the impacts of grazing management on livestock behavior and performance: A case study in the Peruvian Andes

open access: yesGrassland Research, EarlyView.
Our modeling study shows that livestock management strongly influences grazing behavior and animal performance in the Peruvian Andes. Furthermore, adjusting stocking rates and improving animal distribution can enhance forage intake and body condition while increasing forage biomass.

Investigating the Impact of El Niño–Southern Oscillation on Rangeland Productivity in the Limpopo Province, South Africa

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
This study investigated ENSO effects on rainfall variability and rangeland productivity across Limpopo Province, South Africa, using DMP and ONI data for 1999–2024. Productivity was higher in eastern and southern regions and lower in northern and western regions.

Use of natural ensiling additives with tropical grasses: Physicochemical properties, in vitro fermentation characteristics, and microbial community diversity indices

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Improving feed quality, availability, and cost‐effectiveness is a big challenge for livestock to ensure animal‐derived food for nutritional security. The aim of the study was to find out how some natural ensiling additives affect physicochemical properties, proximate composition, microbial population, in vitro fermentation ...

Morpho-physiological and anatomical responses of two Urochloa hybrids under shade: Dataset article

open access: yesData in Brief
Silvopastoral systems are an important strategy for sustainable livestock production. However, to expand their implementation, it is crucial to identify and develop forage materials that maintain good production and quality while being tolerant to shade ...

Afforestation Partially Offsets Losses of Soil Conservation Services and Carbon Stock From Direct and Indirect Urban Expansion in China

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Urban expansion has exerted both direct and indirect impacts on natural land and ecosystem services it supports, driven by increasing population and food demand, yet these underlying pathways remain insufficiently distinguished. Here, we quantified the losses of soil conservation services (water erosion regulation and sandstorm prevention) and
