Tropicalizing binary geometries

open access: yesLe Matematiche
The type A cluster configuration space, commonly known as $\mathcal M_{0,n}$, is the very affine part of the binary geometry associated with the associahedron. The tropicalization of $\mathcal M_{0,n}$ can be realized as the space of phylogenetic trees and its signed tropicalizations as the dual-associahedron subfans. We give a concise overview of this

Population recovery of an endangered macaw enhances long‐distance seed dispersal via stomatochory

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Seed dispersal by large, mobile vertebrates plays a key role in shaping plant spatial dynamics and community structure. However, how variation in animal population size influences the magnitude and spatial scale of seed dispersal remains poorly understood.

Simulation-Based evaluation of adaptive light shelf design for daylight uniformity in tropical office buildings

open access: yesARTEKS : Jurnal Teknik Arsitektur
Light shelves represent a quintessential passive design typology, traditionally utilized to augment daylight penetration while simultaneously mitigating glare to enhance interior visual ergonomics; however, conventional static configurations often fail ...

PLA/Kahili Ginger Fiber Biocomposites Processed by Fused Filament Fabrication: Physical and Mechanical Characterization

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Processing route of PLA/KG composites and the resulting mechanical properties compared to PLA. ABSTRACT This study explores the potential of Kahili ginger (KG) fibers as reinforcement/filler in poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix composites for 3D printing applications.

Using art history to explore society's changing connections with agriculture

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Food insecurity is a looming challenge that especially affects those least fortunate. Consumer food choices have a substantial impact on the sustainability of current food systems. Here, we use art as a lens through which to consider our contemporary and historical relationship to one of the world's most crucial crops, the potato, in the context of the

Integrating habitat suitability, socioeconomics, and infrastructure to assess global biological invasion risk under climate change: A case study of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
We developed an invasion risk index framework that integrates socioeconomic and environmental data using an entropy‐weighting method. The case study highlights the need for region‐specific biosecurity measures for Chilo suppressalis. Abstract BACKGROUND Biological invasion risk is a multifaceted concept that, according to the Food and Agriculture ...

Simple Mechanism for Optimal Light-Use Efficiency of Photosynthesis Inspired by Giant Clams

open access: yesPRX Energy
In photosymbiotic giant clams, vertical columns of single-celled algae absorb sunlight that has first been forward scattered from a superficial layer of light-scattering cells called iridocytes.

Tropical plane geometric constructions: a transfer technique in Tropical Geometry

open access: yesRevista Matemática Iberoamericana, 2011
The notion of geometric construction is introduced. This notion allows to compare incidence configurations both lying in the algebraic and the tropical plane. We provide sufficient conditions in a geometric construction to ensure that there is always an algebraic counterpart related by tropicalization.

A multimodel intercomparison study of variable‐resolution global models with grid refinement over the Arctic and Antarctic

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We document the protocol and first results from the first ever coordinated multimodel variable‐resolution experiment set with refinement over the polar regions. We find that the refinement generally yields model‐dependent effects. The most consistent improvement is an amelioration of the upper‐level cold bias in the polar regions that translates into ...
