Social and Ecological Dimensions of Tropical Peatland Restoration: Foreword [PDF]

open access: yesMires and Peat
Tropical peatlands in Indonesia have attracted international and domestic attention and concern in recent decades. Indonesian peatlands provide globally significant climate regulation and biodiversity provisioning ecosystem services and are central to ...

Variation in carbon and nitrogen concentrations among peatland categories at the global scale

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
Peatlands account for 15 to 30% of the world’s soil carbon (C) stock and are important controls over global nitrogen (N) cycles. However, C and N concentrations are known to vary among peatlands contributing to the uncertainty of global C inventories ...

Application of agroforestry business models to tropical peatland restoration. [PDF]

open access: yesAmbio, 2022
AbstractIndonesia is home to around 45% of the world’s tropical peatlands which continue to be degraded on a large scale by deforestation, drainage and fire, contributing massively to global GHG emissions. Approaches to restoring the peat–water balance and reducing emissions in peat hydrological units, through managing them based either on full ...

Tropical peat surface oscillations are a function of peat condition at North Selangor peat swamp forest, Malaysia

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2023
Tropical peatland condition across southeast Asia is deteriorating as a result of conversion to agriculture and urban zones. Conversion begins by lowering the water table, which leads to peat decomposition, subsidence and increased risk of large-scale ...

Peatlands Are More Beneficial if Conserved and Restored than Drained for Monoculture Crops

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2021
Peatlands are especially important but fragile tropical landscapes. The importance of peatlands is owing to their ability to 1) sequester a considerable amount of terrestrial carbon, 2) store freshwater, and 3) regulate floods during the rainy season ...

Tropical peatlands and their conservation are important in the context of COVID-19 and potential future (zoonotic) disease pandemics [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused global disruption, with the emergence of this and other pandemics having been linked to habitat encroachment and/or wildlife exploitation.

Palaeoecology of testate amoebae in a tropical peatland [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Protistology, 2016
We present the first detailed analysis of subfossil testate amoebae from a tropical peatland. Testate amoebae were analysed in a 4-m peat core from western Amazonia (Peru) and a transfer function developed from the site was applied to reconstruct changes in water table over the past ca. 8,000 years.

Characterizing subsidence in used and restored peatland with Sentinel SAR data

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2023
Peatland is a fragile ecosystem in the tropical region which is prone to subsidence. Until now, there is still lack of procedure to rapidly assess a tropical peatland subsidence in a large area.

Peatland core domain sets: building consensus on what should be measured in research and monitoring [PDF]

open access: yesMires and Peat, 2022
It is often difficult to compile and synthesise evidence across multiple studies to inform policy and practice because different outcomes have been measured in different ways or datasets and models have not been fully or consistently reported.
