Transpiration of Trees in a Tropical Rainforest

The Journal of Applied Ecology, 1977
The tritium method was used to measure the transpiration of twenty trees in a tropical rainforest in the Amazon Territory of Venezuela. Transpiration rates ranged from 2-7 1 day-' for small understorey trees to 1180 1 day-' for large canopy trees. Transpiration rates were highly correlated (r = 0 96) with the sapwood area of trees.

Ant-gardens of tropical Asian rainforests

Naturwissenschaften, 2006
Ant-garden (AG) associations are systems of epiphytic plants and arboricolous (i.e., tree-living) ants, in which the ants build fragile carton nests containing organic material. They collect and incorporate seeds or fruits of epiphytes that then germinate and grow on the nest [sensu Corbara et al. (1999) 38:73-89].

Ecology of tropical butterflies in rainforest gaps

Oecologia, 2001
Tropical forest gaps are ephemeral and patchily distributed within forest areas and have very different light environments compared with closed-canopy forest. We used fruit-baited traps to investigate if gaps are exploited by more opportunistic butterfly species compared with closed-canopy forest.

The Tropical Rainforest Crisis

1998
‘Crisis’ is an overworked term in the English language. It is used to describe everything from the smallest of domestic problems (the babysitter cancels at the last minute) to the largest, most dramatic of global events (Bosnia). The term implies that the events identified as crises require urgent and careful attention demonstrating an individual’s or ...

The tropical rainforest vegetation in Xishuangbanna

Chinese Geographical Science, 1992
The tropical rainforest in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province of China, is introduced in detail in this paper. Situated at the northern margin of tropical mainland SE Asia and controlled by monsoon climate, the region has been climatically at the lower limits for tropical rainforests, however true tropical rainforests exist and develop luxuriantly in the ...

The rehabilitation of the tropical rainforests’ ecosystems

1993
The concern over depletion of the tropical rainforests has resulted in an increasing emphasis toward the programmes in rehabilitation in an effort to maintain the ecological balance within the ecosystem. In Malaysia, the loss of the natural tropical forest is due to harvesting of its timbers and conversion into lands for the purpose of agriculture ...

Impacts of warming on tropical lowland rainforests

Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 2011
Before the end of this century, tropical rainforests will be subject to climatic conditions that have not existed anywhere on Earth for millions of years. These forests are the most species-rich ecosystems in the world and play a crucial role in regulating carbon and water feedbacks in the global climate system; therefore, it is important that the ...

The Life of Bonobos in a Tropical Rainforest

2019
“Which one do you think you would prefer to be, a bonobo or a chimp?” I inadvertently took a deep breath and looked around. It was summer 2005 and I was just finishing an interview with a BBC reporter at the British Embassy in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo).

Tropical Deforestation and Rainforest Degradation

1998
The critical approach to regime analysis developed in the previous chapter directs us to examine specific issue areas when analysing the process of regime formation. This requirement necessitates in turn a solid grounding in the issue area being investigated.
