Tree Rings in the Tropics: Insights into the Ecology and Climate Sensitivity of Tropical Trees
2016Tree-ring studies provide important contributions to understanding the climate sensitivity of tropical trees and the effects of global change on tropical forests. This chapter reviews recent advances in tropical tree-ring research. In tropical lowlands, tree ring formation is mainly driven by seasonal variation in precipitation or flooding , and not in

Consequences of defaunation for a tropical tree community
Ecology Letters, 2013AbstractHunting affects a considerably greater area of the tropical forest biome than deforestation and logging combined. Often even large remote protected areas are depleted of a substantial proportion of their vertebrate fauna. However, understanding of the long‐term ecological consequences of defaunation in tropical forests remains poor.

Phenology of temperate trees in tropical climates
International Journal of Biometeorology, 2005Several North American broad-leaved tree species range from the northern United States at approximately 47 degrees N to moist tropical montane forests in Mexico and Central America at 15-20 degrees N. Along this gradient the average minimum temperatures of the coldest month (T (Jan)), which characterize annual variation in temperature, increase from ...

Area, 2004
Repeat photography is the process of rephotographing the same scene that appears in an earlier photograph. As a methodology, repeat photography is a valuable tool for investigating and assessing landscape change. Beyond the disadvantages of scale, composition, areal coverage and temporal punctuation, the method is useful.

Decelerating growth in tropical forest trees
Ecology Letters, 2007Abstract The impacts of global change on tropical forests remain poorly understood. We examined changes in tree growth rates over the past two decades for all species occurring in large (50‐ha) forest dynamics plots in Panama and Malaysia.

Drought Survival Strategies of Tropical Trees
2016Climate change is predicted to increase the occurrence of extreme droughts, which are associated with elevated mortality rates in tropical trees. Drought-induced mortality is thought to occur by two main mechanisms: hydraulic failure or carbon starvation .

TOWARDS A CLASSIFICATION OF TROPICAL FRUIT TREES
Acta Horticulturae, 1986The classification reveals a pattern in the confusing multitude of tree crops; its usefulness is enhanced because of similarities in ecology and fruitfulness of the species within a class. The contrast between the fruitful, continuously growing single-stemmed species and the rather unfruitful, rhythmically growing branched species is striking.
