TRPM8 Biology and Medicinal Chemistry
Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry, 2011TRPM8 belongs to the TRPM Melastatin subfamily of Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) ion channels. Activated by cool temperatures and mimetic ligands, such as menthol and icilin, TRPM8 has been shown to play a role in thermoreception and is expressed in peripheral nerves.

Characterisation of TRPM8 as a pharmacophore receptor
Cell Calcium, 2007Some proteins of the transient receptor potential (TRP) family form temperature sensitive ion channels. One member of the melastatin (M) group, namely TRPM8 is activated by cold and cooling compounds such as menthol and icilin, and its gene is up-regulated in prostate cancer and other malignancies.

The roles of TRPM8 in cold sensation: the six sides of TRPM8
2012Our ability to detect temperatures is conferred by thermally-activated sensory neurons of the peripheral nervous system which innervate the skin, with cell bodies located in the dorsal root and trigeminal ganglia. These thermosensitive neurons express thermally sensitive ion channels of the transient receptor potential (TRP) family, including TRPV1 ...

TRPM8-dependent shaking in mammals and birds
2023Abstract Removing water from wet fur or feathers is important for thermoregulation in warm-blooded animals. The “wet dog shake” (WDS) behavior has been largely characterized in mammals but to a much lesser extent in birds. Although it is known that TRPM8 is the main molecular transducer of low temperature in mammals, it is not clear if ...

TRPM8: a potential target for cancer treatment
Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology, 2016Transient receptor potential (TRP) cation channel superfamily plays critical roles in variety of processes, including temperature perception, pain transduction, vasorelaxation, male fertility, and tumorigenesis. One of seven families within the TRP superfamily of ion channels, the melastatin, or TRPM family comprises a group of eight structurally and ...
