True Triaxial Tests on Natural Shanghai Clay

2018
Drained true triaxial tests on undisturbed and remolded Shanghai silty clay were carried out to investigate the influence of intermediate principle stress on the strength and deformation of natural clay. Test results show that not only the shear strength, but also the volume change of Shanghai clay decreases with the increase of Lode angle θ. The shear

A rock test cell with true triaxial capability

Geotechnical & Geological Engineering, 1999
Conventional so-called triaxial test cells apply the axial stress to a cylindrical sample using steel platens, with the confining stress developed via an annulus of hydraulic fluid retained by a liner in a pressure cell. This does not allow differentiation between the two principal stresses around the core and inhibits the realism with which the rocks ...

DEM simulations of sandstone under true triaxial compressive tests

Acta Geotechnica, 2016
Numerically simulated true triaxial compression tests (σ 1 ≥ σ 2 ≥ σ 3) are conducted in this study to elucidate the failure mechanism of sandstone using 3D discrete element method (DEM), in particular the effect of the intermediate principal stress (σ 2 ...

Results of true triaxial strength tests on rock salt

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1990
Abstract Knowledge of the thermomechanical properties of rock salt is important for the dimensioning of a permanent repository for radioactive wastes in a salt dome and for the necessary safety analysis, as well as for the design of mines and caverns.

A True Triaxial Cell for Soil and Rock

1988
The design and performance of a membrane-piston, high-pressure (σ2 − σ3 ≦ 300 MN/m2) cell are presented. This device is similar to the one used for standard triaxial tests differing only in the stresses, σ2 and σ3, which are independently applied through flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fluid cushions on prismatic specimens.

True-triaxial compressive strength of Maha Sarakham salt

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences, 2013
Abstract True triaxial compressive strengths of the Maha Sarakham salt are experimentally determined by using a polyaxial load frame. The salt specimens with nominal dimensions of 5.4×5.4×10.8 cm 3 are loaded to failure with the minimum principal stress, σ 3 , varying from 0 to 7 MPa, and the intermediate principal stress, σ 2 , varying from 0 ...

Why does the World Need a True Triaxial Tester?

Particle & Particle Systems Characterization, 2007
AbstractThe necessity for intensified research in the field of powder flow behavior is illustrated in this paper. It is argued that recent developments with respect to discrete element modeling, measurement techniques (AFM) and multidisciplinary approaches are particularly helpful in the understanding of powder flow behavior.

True Triaxial Stresses and the Brittle Fracture of Rock

Pure and Applied Geophysics, 2006
This paper reviews the efforts made in the last 100 years to characterize the effect of the intermediate principal stress σ2 on brittle fracture of rocks, and on their strength criteria. The most common theories of failure in geomechanics, such as those of Coulomb, and Mohr, disregard σ2 and are typically based on triaxial testing of cylindrical rock ...

Development of a True Triaxial Testing Facility for Composite Materials

2000
An electromechanical testing facility capable of applying any combination of tensile and/or compressive forces to three mutually orthogonal axes of a thickness-tapered composite cruciform specimen was designed, fabricated, assembled, and evaluated. Any stress ratio in biaxial (σ1 - σ2) or triaxial (σ1 - σ2 - σ3) stress space can be explored using this ...

Behavior of EPS geofoam in true triaxial compression tests

Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 2008
Abstract This paper investigates the behavior of EPS geofoam in a true triaxial apparatus using 70 mm×70 mm×140 mm prismatic brick-shaped specimens. The specimens are subjected to different stress paths in the deviator ( π ) plane by means of stress-controlled loading, in which the axial stress is imposed at a rate of 75 kPa/min in the major ...
