Development of a True Triaxial Apparatus for Sands and Gravels

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2008
Abstract This paper presents a recently developed true triaxial apparatus and a series of verification studies. The apparatus is capable of handling 241-mm cubical specimens providing the means for testing specimens under a wide variety of stress paths under drained and undrained conditions.

True-triaxial strength criteria for rock

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences, 2009
Abstract This paper reviews some strength criteria which include the role of the intermediate principal stress, and proposes a new criterion. Strength criteria of the form σ oct = f N ( σ oct ), such as Drucker–Prager, represent a rotation surface in the principal stress space, symmetric to the line σ 1 = σ 2 = σ 3 in the meridian plane ...

A rock test cell with true triaxial capability

Geotechnical & Geological Engineering, 1999
Conventional so-called triaxial test cells apply the axial stress to a cylindrical sample using steel platens, with the confining stress developed via an annulus of hydraulic fluid retained by a liner in a pressure cell. This does not allow differentiation between the two principal stresses around the core and inhibits the realism with which the rocks ...

Endochronic Modeling of Sand in True Triaxial Test

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1985
The endochronic constitutive equation is written in differential form, which is then used to describe the deviatoric behavior of drained sand in true triaxial test. Explicit equations have been derived. The modified concept of intrinsic time is applied so that no built‐in discontinuities exist in the constitutive equation. Triaxial compression test (TC)

True Triaxial Tests on Natural Shanghai Clay

2018
Drained true triaxial tests on undisturbed and remolded Shanghai silty clay were carried out to investigate the influence of intermediate principle stress on the strength and deformation of natural clay. Test results show that not only the shear strength, but also the volume change of Shanghai clay decreases with the increase of Lode angle θ. The shear

DEM simulations of sandstone under true triaxial compressive tests

Acta Geotechnica, 2016
Numerically simulated true triaxial compression tests (σ 1 ≥ σ 2 ≥ σ 3) are conducted in this study to elucidate the failure mechanism of sandstone using 3D discrete element method (DEM), in particular the effect of the intermediate principal stress (σ 2 ...

Development of a constitutive model for a bedded argillaceous rock from triaxial and true triaxial tests

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2015
In this work, a constitutive model that predicts the mechanical behaviour of Opalinus clay is developed. The model is based on the theory of plasticity, and takes into consideration the inherent anisotropy due to the existence of bedding planes, hardening behaviour before the peak strength, softening behaviour after the peak, and creep effects.

A True Triaxial Cell for Soil and Rock

1988
The design and performance of a membrane-piston, high-pressure (σ2 − σ3 ≦ 300 MN/m2) cell are presented. This device is similar to the one used for standard triaxial tests differing only in the stresses, σ2 and σ3, which are independently applied through flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fluid cushions on prismatic specimens.

True Triaxial Stresses and the Brittle Fracture of Rock

Pure and Applied Geophysics, 2006
This paper reviews the efforts made in the last 100 years to characterize the effect of the intermediate principal stress σ2 on brittle fracture of rocks, and on their strength criteria. The most common theories of failure in geomechanics, such as those of Coulomb, and Mohr, disregard σ2 and are typically based on triaxial testing of cylindrical rock ...

A Small True Triaxial Apparatus with Wave Velocity Measurement

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2005
Abstract This paper describes a new cubical, true triaxial apparatus recently developed at the University of Western Australia (UWA). The apparatus is a stand-alone unit of the rigid type, where three pairs of pistons can be pressurized to impose three independent, rectilinear stresses on a sample of 250 mm side length. The sample can be
