Precession of Isolated Neutron Stars II: Magnetic Fields and Type II Superconductivity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
We consider the physics of free precession of a rotating neutron star with an oblique magnetic field. We show that if the magnetic stresses are large enough, then there is no possibility of steady rotation, and precession is inevitable.

Unveiling the three-dimensional structure of galaxy clusters: resolving the discrepancy between X-ray and lensing masses

open access: yes, 2010
[Abridged] We present the first determination of the intrinsic three-dimensional shapes and the physical parameters of both dark matter (DM) and intra-cluster medium (ICM) in a triaxial galaxy cluster.

Experimental Investigation on the Deformation, Strength, and Acoustic Emission Characteristics of Sandstone under True Triaxial Compression

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2018
The study of deformation, strength, and other mechanical characteristics of sandstone under true triaxial compression is significant for understanding failure mechanisms in rock and evaluating the stability of underground structures.

Influences of True Triaxial Loading-Unloading Stress Paths on Mechanical Properties and Wave Velocity of Coal Samples subject to Risk of Rock Burst

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2021
To study fracture evolution and peak stress in burst risk coal samples (BRCSs) under true triaxial loading and unloading conditions, experimental and numerical research was applied to BRCSs under true triaxial stress paths entailing “x-direction ...

A Three-Dimensional Constitutive Model for Rocks Based on a Strain-Dependent Elastic Modulus

open access: yesLithosphere, 2022
Our research group previously proposed a simple two-dimensional (2D) constitutive model for rocks to simulate not only the axial stress–axial strain relationship, but also the axial stress–lateral strain relationship, with few complicated equations ...

Modeling the gravitational potential of a cosmological dark matter halo with stellar streams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Stellar streams result from the tidal disruption of satellites and star clusters as they orbit a host galaxy, and can be very sensitive probes of the gravitational potential of the host system. We select and study narrow stellar streams formed in a Milky-

Experimental study of mechanical properties of highly-stressed rocks under true triaxial unloading conditions with different unloading directions

open access: yesShuiwen dizhi gongcheng dizhi
During the excavation process of deep rock masses, the surrounding rock stress field forms alternating zones of stress increase (loading zones) and stress decrease (unloading zones) near the excavation surface, which can easily trigger instability and ...

Railway ballast anisotropy testing via true triaxial apparatus [PDF]

open access: yesTransportation Geotechnics, 2020
This paper aims to demonstrate the anisotropic behaviour of railway ballast via true-triaxial tests. To do so, a novel, large-scale, true-triaxial testing apparatus (GeoTT) is designed and constructed. It consists of six hydraulic actuators, designed to apply a distributed stress to large granular cubic test specimens with dimensions: 500 mm × 500 m ...

A New Look at Massive Clusters: weak lensing constraints on the triaxial dark matter halos of Abell 1689, Abell 1835, & Abell 2204

open access: yes, 2008
Measuring the 3D distribution of mass on galaxy cluster scales is a crucial test of the LCDM model, providing constraints on the nature of dark matter. Recent work investigating mass distributions of individual galaxy clusters (e.g.

Study on Failure Difference of Hard Rock Based on a Comparison Between the Conventional Triaxial Test and True Triaxial Test

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
The study on the failure difference of deep hard rock based on the comparison between conventional and true triaxial tests can help us better understand the fracture processes and failure characteristics of the deep rock mass.
