A review on trypanosomosis in dogs and cats [PDF]
Trypanosoma brucei brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi and Trypanosoma congolense were initially thought to be the only species of trypanosomes capable of causing diseases in dogs and cats. However, dogs and cats are challenged by diverse species of trypanosomes with varying virulence and pathogenicity.

Dyserythropoiesis in animal trypanosomosis.
Haemolysis is the most prominent pathogenic cause of the anaemia in trypanosomosis. Haemolytic anaemias are normally accompanied by increased erythropoiesis, reticulocyte response and increase in the mean corpuscular volume of circulating erythrocytes. In trypanosomosis, the anaemia is accompanied by inadequate erythropoiesis.
