The most common cause of tsunami is seismic activity. Over the past two millennia, earthquakes have produced 83.0 % of all tsunami in the Pacific Ocean. Displacement of the Earth’s crust by several meters during underwater earthquakes may cover tens of thousands of square kilometers and impart tremendous potential energy to the overlying water.

Development of a New Tsunami Generator
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2015A middle size experiental wave generator has been implemented is the Ujikawa Open Laboratory, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University. The generator is composed of a pistontype wave maker, a head strage water tank and a current generator to mainly reproduce long waves like tsunami and storm surge. The paper desribes severalexperimental ...

Tsunami generation in compressible ocean
Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, Part B: Hydrology, Oceans and Atmosphere, 1999Abstract Most of the tsunami modelling studies have been carried out within the framework of incompressible fluid theory. Estimations we made show that this approach quite appropriately describes the stages of tsunami propagation and run-up, whereas incompressible fluid theory fails to describe the process of tsunami generation properly.

Tsunamis Generated by Submarine Landslides
2011Submarine landslides can generate tsunamis and cause coastal hazard. Because the horizontal scale of submarine landslide is comparable to water depth and much smaller than the scale of earthquake fault area, the tsunami characteristics is very different from earthquake-generated tsunami which is usually approximated as a shallow-water wave.
